BALTIMORE, MD–UMBC's Ryan Becher and Taylor Calheria each scored a brace in UMBC's 4-1 home victory over visiting NJIT Friday evening in America East Conference men's soccer action at Retriever Soccer Park.
UMBC, which scored a pair of goals in each half, improves to 4-2-0 in the America East, 10-4-2 overall and an impressive 8-1 at home while NJIT wraps up its regular season road slate moving to 0-4-2 in the league, 4-7-4 overall. Freshman Hugo Tavares scored the lone goal of the match for the visiting Highlanders.
The Highlanders will conclude the regular season on Tuesday, November 1 hosting the newest member to the America East Conference, Bryant on Senior Night.
HOW IT HAPPENED

UMBC opened the scoring in the first minute off a set piece on the left side of the field. Jago Lott struck the ball with his right foot into the box and was deflected into the net by Ryan Becher to give the Retrievers a 1-0 lead. Becher tallied his 12th goal of the season.

A scoring opportunity for NJIT in the 20th minute off of a dangerous pass by the UMBC goalkeeper Quantrell Jones which was stolen away by freshman Hugo Tavares. Tavares' right-footed strike towards the lower left corner of the goal was saved by a diving UMBC keeper.

UMBC went ahead 2-0 in the 20th minute as Becher served it to Jordan Ehar who touched it ahead to Taylor Calheria on the far side, tucking away a right-footed strike for the Retrievers second goal of the match.

In the 41st minute, Tavares carried the ball into the box, slipping the ball past three UMBC defenders, finding Alejandro Rabell whose shot was save on the endline by the UMBC backline.

NJIT held a slight edge in overall shots through the first 45 minutes of action 7-to-5, led by Jackson Gould with a pair of shots.

To start the second half, the Retrievers added its third goal of the match on a chip from the right side of the field into the box by Hans Neisheim to Calheira who headed home his second goal of the match.

Twenty second later, NJIT tallied its first goal of the match as Jackson Gould served the ball with his left foot into the box to Taveres. Tavares headed home the Highlanders first tally of the match as Tavares shot deflected off the crossbar and right post into the net.

Sophomore Asembo Augo with a chance in the 72nd minute on a tough angle from the endline just staying wide.

UMBC's Becher scored his second goal of the match in the 82nd minute keeping control of the ball in the center of the box and sending it past a diving Samuel Reisgys to register the brace and to give UMBC a 4-1 advantage.

The Retrievers out-shot the Highlanders by a small margin, 15-to-12 (8-2 SOG). The corner kicks were even at 2-2.

NJIT will conclude the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, November 1 hosting the newest member to the America East Conference, Bryant on Senior Night. In pregame ceremonies, NJIT will recognize four graduate students: Luc Smith, J.J. Gaeir, Anthony Rovito and Jose Del Valle and graduating seniors Alejandro Rabell, Samuel Reisgys, Jose Adames, Arrio Rusnak, Andreas Nicolaou and Eduardo Rossi.
