Weekend Highlights vs. #9 Penn State
NEWARK, NJ--Visiting No. 9 Penn State won in straight sets Saturday afternoon, 3-0 (25-20, 25-18 and 25-21) to sweep the two-match weekend EIVA Conference men's volleyball series at No. 11 NJIT inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
Penn State, which registered its eighth straight win of the season, improved to 14-2 overall, 11-1 in the EIVA while the Highlanders moved to 11-5 overall, 11-3 in the EIVA.
The Nittany Lions combined for a .439 hitting percentage led by a match-best 15 kills by Brett Wildman. Cal Fisher added 13 kills and Michael Valenzi combined for 10 kills, posting a .474 hitting percentage in the win.
Setter Cole Bogner recorded a match-high 34 assists and added six digs as Wildman and Fisher led all players defensively with eight digs. Sam Marsh posted three block assists for Penn State.
Julian Meissner led NJIT with 12 kills and seven digs followed by Alvaro Gimeno with 10 kills on 21 attempts and just two errors for a .381 hitting percentage.
Graduate student Luca Berger added seven kills and shared team-high honors in front of the net with Meissner with two block assists.
Freshman Griffin Fieseler posted 33 assists and six digs.
NJIT will return to action next weekend when the Highlanders host Charleston (WV) on March 27-28. First spike on Friday is set for 7pm followed by a 6pm start on Saturday. Both matches will be streamed live on the Highlanders Sports Network.
