NEWARK, NJ --Visiting Hofstra scored a pair of second half goals, defeating NJIT, 2-1, in a Tuesday non-conference men's soccer matinee at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

NJIT dropped its second match in a row, moving to 1-2-1 on the young season while Hofstra won its second consecutive match, improving to 3-2-0.

Highlander senior Regsan Watkins scored NJIT's lone goal of the match in the 67th minute of action as the home team held a 24-12 shots advantage (7-5 on goal) over Hofstra.

Jason Ramirez and Matthew Vowinkel each scored a goal and were credited with an assist for Hofstra in the 2-1 victory.

A pair of scoring chances for NJIT came in the 22nd minute on a shot by Thomas Radon, which was blocked by the Hofstra defense and a second chance, sailed wide by Watkins.

In the 40th minute, two more scoring opportunities for the Highlanders came on a tremendous individual effort by NJIT graduate student Tomas Jorge on a short angle shot inside the box followed by freshman Jose Escandon's strike just before the first half concluded went wide left of a diving Wessel Speel.

Hofstra broke the ice in the 64th minute on the first official shot on goal for the Pride on a shot by Jason Ramirez assisted by Matthew Vowinel.

Three minutes later, NJIT scored the equalizer on a goal from Watkins, assisted by Jose Escandon, knotting the match at 1-1, in the 67th minute.  The goal for Watkins was his second of the season.

Hofstra grabbed a 2-1 lead on the game-winning goal in the 84th minute by Vowinkel assisted by Ramirez.

Watkins had a late scoring opportunity in the 87th minute after receiving a great pass from Escandon inside the box but Watkins blast was just off target.

Hofstra's Speel picked up the win, stopping six Highlander shots while NJIT's Samuel Reisgys combined for three saves.

NJIT will return to America East Conference action on Friday when the Highlanders visit Vermont in Burlington, VT.  Kickoff is slated for 2pm.  Friday will mark the first all-time meeting between the two schools.
