NJIT Highlights vs. Stony BrookÂ
STONY BROOK, NY--NJIT dropped a close battle at reigning America East Conference champions Stony Brook 63-51 Saturday afternoon in women's basketball America East Conference action at Island Federal Arena.
After a 46-46 tie early in the final quarter, Stony Brook pulled away, using an 11-0 run and outscored the Highlanders 17-9 in the fourth quarter.
Stony Brook (7-4 overall, 5-2 in the America East) had four different players reach double-figures, led by Asiah Dingle's team-best 11 points followed by Mckenzi Bushee, Anatasia Warren and Leigha-Amori Wool with 10 points.
The Seawolves held a 38-to-33 edge on the glass led by Bushee and Earlette Scott with six boards.
For NJIT, Stoll led all scorers with 12 points, shooting 4-for-7 from the field and 2-of-4 from three-point range followed by reigning America East Conference Rookie of the Week Lyzi Litwinko with 11 points and eight rebounds. Forward redshirt junior Kimi Evans chipped in eight points and five rebounds.
Stony Brook started off on fire, scoring the first seven points of the game. Kimi Evans put the Highlanders on the board at the 6:48 mark with a left jump hook, which sparked a 5-0 run for the visitors. Squier stopped the three-minute scoring drought with a lay-up just under the two-minute mark. Stony Brook used an 8-2 run to close out the quarter and held a 17-9 advantage. NJIT's Squier scored five of NJIT's nine points in the first 10.
A 7-2 start to the second period for NJIT, cut the Stony Brook deficit to three, 19-16, capped by NJIT's first three-pointer of the game from Kiana Brereton. Stony Brook matched its largest lead of the game, eight, 26-18 at the 4:30 mark. In the final minute, NJIT used a 6-1 spurt, including a three-pointer by Dani Evans, her first points of the game, heading into the half down four, 29-25.
At the half, Squier led NJIT with five points followed by Kimi Evans, Stoll and Litwinko with four points. Stony Brook's Bushee led all scorers with 10 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the field.
A 6-1 run to begin the third quarter and NJIT knotted the score for the first time at 31-31 behind four points from Kimi Evans. Stony Brook pushed its lead to five, 36-31, after a jumper from Dingle but the Highlanders closed the gap to within one, 36-35, after a pair of buckets from Stoll and Litwinko at the four-minute mark. The Seawolves scored six quick points, taking a 45-35 lead. Maria Fux connected on her first three-pointer of the game with :45 left in the quarter, pulling NJIT within one, 43-42.
The game saw its second tie of the game, 46-46, early in the fourth quarter after a three-pointer delivered by Stoll. Stony Brook used an 11-0 run over the next 5:25 for a 11-point advantage, 57-46, its largest lead of the game. Stoll's quick trigger three-pointer cut the Seawolves lead to seven, 58-51 with less than three to play.
The two teams will return to action on Sunday at 2pm on ESPN3.
