NEWARK, NJ--Sophomore guard Kenna Squier led all scorers with 15 points, leading NJIT to a 65-51 home victory over visiting Hartford Sunday afternoon in women's basketball America East Conference action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
NJIT, which snaps a five-game skid, moves back into the win column, improving to 3-10 overall, 3-5 in the America East while Harford drops its fourth straight, falling to 3-6 overall, 3-6 in the America East.
In addition to Squier's 15 points, Dani Evans combined for season-best 11 points and personal-best nine rebounds in 20 minutes of action off the bench. Evans went 3-for-7 from the field, 2-of-5 from three-point range and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Her nine rebounds led all players as the Highlander held an advantage on the glass, 44-to-38.
Freshman Lyzi Litwinko chipped in nine points, nine rebounds and four assists while redshirt junior Kimi Evans added eight points followed by seven from senior Ellyn Stoll.
Hartford was led by Breyenne Bellerand with nine points while three different Hawks -- Jordan McLemore, Abby Streeter and Marisa Lee each combined for eight points. Guard Nina Farkic shared game-best honors with Dani Evans, grabbing nine boards.
NJIT led by nine, 48-39 heading into the fourth quarter, outscored the visitors in the final stanza, 17-12 and finished the final 3:32 on a 11-4 spurt to secure the 65-51 victory over Hartford.
An early back-and-forth affair in the opening five minutes between the two teams saw four ties and an 8-8 score heading into the first media timeout. Kimi Evans scored four straight points to give NJIT a 12-8 advantage. After one more tie in the score at 12-all and the Highlanders closed out the quarter with a short 4-0 run, taking a 16-13 lead.
NJIT used a 10-0 run in the second quarter, capped by a three-pointer by Dani Evans for a 29-18 advantage, resulting in a Hartford timeout at the 5:07 mark. Over the next four minutes, Hartford went on a 7-1 run of their own, cutting the Highlander deficit to five, 30-25. Litwinko scored the last six points for NJIT in the final 3:26, as the Highlanders headed into the locker room with a seven-point lead, 35-28.
Litwinko and Squier shared game-high honors with Hartford's McLeomore with eight points after the first 20 minutes.Â
NJIT opened the third period, scoring the first six points and used a 1-3 run to go up by double-digits, 15, 46-31 at the 4:36 mark. Hartford closed out the quarter on an 8-2 run, slimming the Highlander lead to nine, 48-39.
The two teams will return to action on Monday, January 18. Tip-off is slated for 2pm on ESPN+
