NEWARK, NJ--Visiting Jacksonville topped NJIT, 66-54, led by a game-high 19 points from Shakayla Nevitt in ASUN Conference women's basketball action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
Jacksonville improves to 14-9 overall, 6-4 in the ASUN while the Highlanders move to 3-19 overall, 0-9 in ASUN action.
In addition to Nevitt's game-high 19 points, Kiara Meeks combined for 13 points and eight rebounds while Mariah Batz scored 11 points on 4-of-7 from the field off the bench for the Dolphins.
The Highlanders were led by senior forward Danielle Tunstall's 17th career double-double (sixth of the season) 16 points and 14 rebounds, leading three double-figure scorers for NJIT. Kenna Squier and Ellyn Stoll each scored 10 points and added two assists.
Freshman guard Kennedy Cash, making her fifth start of the season, scored a career-best eight points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 from three-point range. Forward Milena Bajic chipped in five points and grabbed seven rebounds for NJIT.
NJIT started off on fire scoring the first seven points and pushing ahead 9-2 three minutes into the game, led by Kennedy Cash with five points in the run. The Dolphins rallied back late, scoring the final nine points in the period, taking its first lead of the game 15-12.
The Highlanders broke its scoring drought on an old-fashion three-point play by Danielle Tunstall, slimming the Jacksonville lead to five, 18-15, with five left to play. The Dolphins, which outscored the Highlanders 12-5 in the second period, used a 9-2 spurt, taking a 10-point lead at the half, 27-17.
Jacksonville's Shakayla Nevitt led all scorers with 12 points while NJIT's Kenna Squier was the high scorer for the Highlanders with seven points. Senior forward Danielle Tunstall led all players on the glass with eight.
A high-scoring third period for both teams as the Highlanders shot 64.3 percent from the field (9-for-14) and the Dolphins shot 53.8 percent (7-for-13). Tunstall scored the last five points of the period for NJIT as the Dolphins outscored NJIT by three points 25-22 for a 52-39 lead.
NJIT opened the fourth quarter on an 8-2 spurt after a pair of three-pointers from Tracey Brereton and Kenna Squier and jumper from Ellyn Stoll to get the home team started, closing Jacksonville's gap to seven, 54-47. The Dolphins pushed its advantage to 12, 64-52, with 2:10 on the clock and held on for the road victory.
NJIT will wrap up its three-game homestand on Monday, February 10 at 7pm when the Highlanders welcome North Florida. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.Â
