NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT men's soccer team will return to action on Sunday at 7:30pm when the Highlanders visit VCU at the Sports Backers Stadium.
Due to the effects of Hurricane Dorian, the NJIT men's soccer match scheduled for Friday, September 6 at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Virginia was cancelled. The 44
th Old Dominion Stihl Classic has been reduced to one game for each team.
All-Time Series
NJIT and VCU will meet for the first time in 2019. The Rams, which compete in the Atlantic 10, finished with 10 wins last season and a 6-1-1 A-10 mark en route to claiming the regular season title.

Last Time Out
The NJIT men's soccer team played to a 2-2 double overtime draw in the home opener for the Highlanders on Labor Day against Fordham in non-conference action at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
NJIT (1-0-1) struck first in the 26th minute, as redshirt junior
Rene White netted his third goal of the season on a penalty kick into the right side of the goal. The Highlanders received the ball in the box where Fordham defender was called for a foul, awarding NJIT a penalty kick.
White, who scored a pair of goals and tallied in an assist in the Highlanders' 7-0 shutout victory at Sacred Heart to open the 2019 campaign, collected his 20th career goal.
The home team went ahead, 2-0, five minutes later, on a cross by junior transfer
Gerald Cubero from the right side, finding
Thomas Radon, who finished 12 yards out and to the right of the Rams keeper, notching his second goal of the season.
2019 NJIT Outlook
After finishing with a 6-11-0 overall mark last season, fourth-year head coach
Fernando Barboto will feature 11 newcomers as the Highlanders open the brand new state-of-the-art facility, Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
Rene White, named to the ASUN Preseason All-Conference team, returns after a 2018 season which saw him lead the team in goals (11) and points (24). His totals in both statistical categories ranked him third in the ASUN for the season and helped him earn an ASUN All-Conference Second Team selection.
ASUN Rankings
NJIT's seven goals scored and seven assists in the win over Sacred Heart last week are both ASUN match highs this season. Those seven goals scored were the most scored by a Highlander team in the Division I era since 2013, when the team scored six vs. Howard.
With a 1-0-1 record, NJIT is one of five undefeated ASUN squads. The Highlanders look to remain undefeated through its first three matches for the fourth consecutive season.
NJIT has two players ranked in the top two in goals –
Rene White, tied for first with three goals and
Thomas Radon, ranked second with a pair of goals. White is also tied for first in points with seven.
Senior
Andrew Nino ranks tied for first in assists (2) and sits tied for second in points with teammate Radon with four.
Freshman keeper
Samuel Reisgys tops the ASUN in saves (11), ranks second in save percentage (.846) and third in goals-against average (0.94).
Scouting VCU
VCU enters Sunday's contest with an even 1-1 record, after opening the season, hosting a pair of matches at home.
The Rams recorded its first win of the season, 1-0, against East Tennessee, netting the game-winner in the 42
nd minute.
Against LIU, the Rams played with 10 men from the 30
th minute forward, after a red card was issued on a collision with the LIU keeper on a breakaway. LIU scored in the 57
th minute off a corner kick deflected off a VCU defender to the feet of an LIU player who slotted the ball in the bottom right corner of the goal.
2019 Rams Outlook
The Rams return seven starters from last year's championship squad and add 10 talented newcomers to the 2019 roster.
In addition to Edvardsen, the Rams return senior defender Ryo Shimazaki and senior goalkeeper Mario Sequeira who earned second team All A-10 honors last season.
Preseason Atlantic 10 Poll
VCU was picked to finish first in the 2019 Preseason Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll, receiving 159 points and eight first place votes. In addition, junior defender Ulrik Edvardsen was named to the preseason All-Conference Team.

On September 11, NJIT will host Drexel on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium at 7pm before playing the next three matches on the road – at Radford (September 14), at Fairleigh Dickinson (September 17) and at Stetson (September 21) to open ASUN Conference action.
