NEWARK, NJ - First-year head coach Pedro Trevino and the NJIT women's volleyball team will open up its 2019 season with three matches this weekend at the Terrier Classic in Brooklyn. The Highlanders will take on host St. Francis College on Friday at 3pm, before playing a pair of neutral matches on Saturday against the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (11:30am) and Central Michigan University (4:30pm). 

Trevino, a 2001 NJIT graduate and four-year member of the school's men's volleyball program, will bring a young squad to Brooklyn with a roster that features just four seniors to go along with five sophomores and eight freshmen. 

"I'm expecting this season to be an up-and-down year with so many underclassmen," explained Trevino. "With that said, I'm confident our seniors and returners will help the freshmen along and we can have a very successful season."

The Highlanders' senior class - Liz Benson, Madi Busler, Alahna Diaz, and Olivia Welsch - all have put together solid careers for NJIT and will look to lead the team to its first-ever Atlantic Sun Tournament. 

"As the only upperclassmen, the four of us are excited to take the younger players under our wing and make this a really special year," said Welsch. "The goal is to make it to the postseason."

After this weekend's three games in Brooklyn, the Highlanders will return back to Newark for the first of nine home matches when they host St. John's University on Tuesday at 7pm in the Wellness and Events Center.
