NJIT Highlights at FGCU | 3.8.19
FORT MYERS, FL—Top-seeded FGCU was paced by three double-figure scorers, leading the Eagles to a 58-45 victory over No. 8 seeded NJIT, in the ASUN Conference Quarterfinals hosted by FGCU at Alico Arena on Friday evening.
FGCU's (26-4) Davion Wingate and Keri Jewett-Giles shared game-high honors with 18 points apiece while ASUN Player of the Year Nasrin Ulel added 11 points for the Eagles.
On the boards, Tyrionia Adderly grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds as the Eagles held a slight advantage on the glass, 34-30.
NJIT (6-24) was paced by junior forward
Danielle Tunstall with 13 points followed by eight points each by
Dez Allen and
Milena Bajic. Bajic led the Highlanders, pulling down eight rebounds while Tunstall grabbed seven.
The top-seeded FGCU jumped out of the gates early, taking a 10-2 lead into the first media timeout led by Davion Wingate with five points in the run for the Eagles. NJIT's
Tatianna Torres connected on a jumper just inside the three-point mark and
Dez Allen scored a basket with ten seconds, responding to cut the lead to 12-6.
FGCU continued its hot streak into the second quarter with a 13-2 spurt, paced by six points from guard Keri Jewett-Giles, extending its lead to 25-8 with seven minutes on the clock.
NJIT found rhythm, sparked by a basket from Allen at the 5:40 mark followed by a three-pointer from the top of the key from
Ellyn Stoll and bucket by
Danielle Tunstall for a 30-17 scored with less than two to play in the period. The Eagles scored the final seven points of the quarter to end the half ahead, 36-19.
Jewett-Giles and Ulel led all scorers after 20 minutes, with 11 points while NJIT's Allen paced NJIT with eight points.
Trailing 36-19 at the half, NJIT opened the third period on 9-2 run, holding the Eagles scoreless over the first 4:15, slimming the Eagles lead to 11, 39-28. NJIT cut the lead to single digits, nine, 45-36, thanks to back-to-back three pointers from straight on from junior forward
Milena Bajic.
FGCU took its largest lead of the game, 19, 57-38, with less than five minutes to play. The Highlanders closed out the game on a 7-1 spurt, sparked by a lay-up from senior
Amarri Trueheart and capped by graduate student
Kelly Guarino's three-pointer with four seconds on the clock, for her final collegiate career points.
Guarino, the 2019 ASUN Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, concludes her collegiate career with 1,068 points, which ranks eighth all-time in school-history and 250 three-pointers – which tops the NJIT record books. She moves to seventh all-time in ASUN history with 250 made three-pointers.

Jordan Ireland all complete their playing careers at NJIT.
Torres completes her career rank in the top 10 all-time (fourth in D1 era) with 261 assists and tops the Division I record books with 153 steals (eighth all-time).
NJIT, under the direction of
Mike Lane, completes his first season at the helm of the Highlanders with a 6-24 mark, an improvement of two wins from last season's four.
