PRINCETON, NJ—Powered by three players registering double-figure kills, Princeton edged visiting NJIT in five sets, 3-2, in EIVA Conference men's volleyball action at Dillon Gym on Tuesday night.
Princeton moved back into the win column, improving to 9-8 overall, 7-1 in the EIVA and 4-0 at home, edging the Highlanders (4-10, 0-6 EIVA) 25-20, 25-19, 18-25, 14-25 and 17-15.
George Huhmann led the match for Princeton, combining for 18 kills followed by Parker Dillon (15) and Greg Luck (11). Setter Joe Kelly notched 45 assists while defensively, Corry Short posted six digs and Huhmann shared match-high honors with NJIT's
Enrique de Diego Garcia in front of the net with seven total blocks (all assists).
The Tigers held a 10-for-6 service ace advantage, paced by Huhmann (4) and Luck (3). NJIT's
Luca Berger recorded five of the Highlanders six aces in the match.
NJIT had two players reach double-figure kill totals, led by sophomore
Alvaro Gimeno (17) and
Piotr Namiotko (11). Freshman
Jens Feldthus added seven digs for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders used two setters –
Pat Howell and
Roque Nido – notching 22 and 14 assists respectively. Namiotko led the match with nine digs.
The visitors held a 15-to-8 advantage in front of the net, paced by De Diego Garcia (seven block assists), Gimeno (one solo, five assists) and
Luca Berger (four assists).
In the first frame, NJIT led in the early teens, 13-10, after a kill by Namiotko. Princeton, who finished the set, hitting .409, rallied and used a 7-1 run to push ahead, 17-14, and never looked back, earning a 25-20 victory.
The second set saw nine ties and three lead changes, the final at 10-all, as the Highlanders scored two straight points. Princeton scored seven unanswered, to gain a 17-12 lead, and hold on for a 25-19 win.
NJIT jumped out to an early 9-5 lead and later pushed its lead to seven, 20-13, resulting in a Princeton timeout, after three consecutive Highlander points. Princeton scored the next three points but the Highlanders closed out on the set on a 5-1 spurt, capped by a kill from De Diego Garcia for a 25-18 victory. NJIT hit .438 in the match with 10 kills, three errors on 16 attempts.
The Highlanders hit an impressive .611 in the fourth frame and continued its momentum, taking a 14-8 lead and scoring the final six points of the set, knotting the match at 2-2 behind a 25-14 win. NJIT registered 12 kills on 18 swings with just one error.
In the fifth and deciding set, Princeton opened up the frame on a 5-2 run. NJIT fought back and regained its lead, 13-12, behind three consecutive points by the Highlanders, resulting in a Tigers timeout.
After a service error by the Tigers, put the Highlanders ahead, 14-13, with match-point, but Princeton took its second timeout of the set to regroup. Princeton used a 4-1 spurt to close out the set with a 17-15 victory to secure the 3-2 win.
The two teams will return to action on Friday at 6pm in Newark at NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
