NEWARK, NJ--NJIT picked up its second win of the season behind four double-figure scorers led by a career-best 21 points, 10 rebounds from freshman Kenna Squier in the Highlanders 76-73 home victory over visiting Saint Peter's Wednesday in women's basketball non-conference action at NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
NJIT, winners of two in a row, improve to 2-6 on the young season while Saint Peter's moves to an even 3-3.
Squier led a balanced attack for NJIT, setting a new personal-best mark of 21 points, shooting 8-for-12 from the field, 5-for-8 from the free throw line and grabbing 10 rebounds, a new career-high. The 5-foot-9 guard registered her first double-double of her career in the win over the Peacocks.
Senior forward Milena Bajic recorded her second straight double-double, netting 17 points and 13 rebounds. The 17 points matches Bajic personal-best (17 vs. Vermont; 12.2.18) and 13 rebounds is a new personal best. Bajic finished 8-for-10 from the free throw line and 4-of-10 from the field.
Classmate Danielle Tunstall scored 13 points on 6-of-14 from the field, grabbing five rebounds and posting two blocks while junior guard Ellyn Stoll chipped in 11 points on 5-of-7 from the field.
Forward Maria Fux, reigning ASUN Conference Freshman of the Week, added six points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the Highlanders win.
Saint Peter's was led by a game-high 24 points from guard Taiah Thorton followed by Kendrea Williams (17 points) and Briyana Richardson (15 points).
In a back-and-forth affair in the opening five minutes of action, NJIT took an early lead 10-6, after a layup by Stoll. Saint Peter's scored five straight, taking an 11-10 advantage and extended its lead to 18-14 on one-of-two made by Saint Peter's Thorton. NJIT's Kennedy Cash converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:22 on the clock, pulling NJIT to within one, 18-17.
Saint Peter's opened the second quarter with a three-pointer but the Highlanders scored seven consecutive points, sparked by a trey ball from Kendle Dalrymple for a 24-23 lead at the eight-minute mark. Saint Peter's regained the lead and took a four-point lead, 28-24, on a Peacock free throw.
NJIT used a 6-2 spurt, knotting the contest at 30-all, capped by a layup by Maddie Martin and Stoll put the Highlanders ahead by three, 35-32, on a stepback three-pointer with less than three minutes on the clock. NJIT scored the final five points of the period, taking a five-point half time lead, 42-37.
In the third quarter, NJIT pushed its advantage to seven on several occasions late in the period and took its first double-figure lead on back-to-back layups by Squier to give NJIT its biggest lead of the game, 12, 64-52.
NJIT continued its momentum into the fourth quarter, starting off on a quick 4-2 run, extending its lead to 68-54 after a pair of free throws made by Maria Fux. Saint Peter's rallied back to cut the Highlander deficit to single-digits, using a 10-2 run midway through the quarter, pulling within four, 72-68, with less than three to play. Richardson scored nine points in the run for Saint Peter's.
Bajic scored three straight from the free throw line, giving NJIT a seven-point lead, 75-68, with :45 remaining. Saint Peter's responded cutting the Highlander lead to within three, 76-73, on a three-pointer by Williams with nine seconds left but the Highlanders would hold on to secure the victory.
NJIT will return to action on Saturday at 2pm when the Highlanders visit Hartford. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
