WATCH: NJIT Highlights vs. North Alabama
NEWARK, NJ—North Alabama's Emma Wallen scored a game-high 23 points, leading four double-figure scorers for the Lions en route to a 77-54 victory over NJIT in ASUN Conference action at NJIT's Wellness and Events Center Sunday afternoon.
In addition to Emma Wallen's 23 points, North Alabama (15-2, 6-1 ASUN), Brittany Panetti scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Katelyn Nunley scored 11 points in 11 minutes of the bench for the Lions. Ivy Wallen, twin sister to Emma, scored 10 points and dished out a game-high nine assists.
NJIT (5-14, 2-4 ASUN) was led by Danielle Tunstall's 19 points — the only double-digit scorer for the Highlanders on 9-of-14 from the field. The junior forward has scored in double-figures in the last five games and was one rebound shy a double-double against the Lions.
Sophomore forward Dez Allen came off the bench to score eight points and pull down seven rebounds while Ellyn Stoll added seven points.
The Lions held a 36-31 advantage on the boards — NJIT's Tunstall paced the game with nine.
North Alabama scored the first six points of the contest and pushed its lead to 10, 16-6, after a three-pointer by Emma Wallen. NJIT netted four consecutive points, cutting the Lions lead to six 16-10, on back-to-back baskets by Danielle Tunstall and Dez Allen. UNA's Emma Walden scored nine points in the opening 10 minutes.
NJIT slimmed the Lions deficit to single-digits — nine on four different occasions — the final after a layup by Tunstall at the 4:37 mark. After two scoreless minutes, Tunstall sank one-of-two from the free throw line for an eight-point game, 27-19.
Tunstall and Emma Wallen each led all scorers at the half with 11 points.
Trailing, 31-19 at the half, NJIT would cut the Lion lead to 10, 40-30, after a quick 6-0 run by the Highlanders, sparked by a layup by Tatianna Torres at the 7:00 mark. North Alabama Katelyn Nunley scored seven straight points, pushing the Lions lead to 17, 47-30, with 4:42 on the clock.
North Alabama took its largest lead of the game in the fourth quarter, 26, 65-39 and cruised to a 77-54 victory.
The Lions finished 48.2 percent from the field (27-56), 43 percent from three-point range (7-16) and 80 percent from the free throw line (16-20).
NJIT will have a quick turnaround and welcome first-place FGCU on Tuesday at 7pm before hitting the road for three consecutive in the ASUN.
