Three Highlanders Compete in Final Day at West Point Invitational

WEST POINT, NY – Three women's tennis players made it to the finals in their respective flights on the final day at the West Point Invitational on Sunday.

"This year's Army Invitational is very strong as 20 universities participated, "said head coach Zaki Abdelrahman, "the level was really high, across the board I thought we did well in different ways.

Joleta Budiman beat Cassie Chung from UConn 8-3 in the semi-finals and then beat Binghamton's Samara Eisenberg 8-4 to win the Flight A consolation.

Mikaya Hamilton was the other singles winner, defeating Buse Gunay 8-3 to win the Flight D  consolation.

Coach Abdelrahman continued, "In singles, Advaita (Saravanan) is currently playing her best tennis and competed the best way in Flight A. She had a string win against a top UConn player, and in the second round performed even stronger and created many chances but lost a close 7-6 7-5. Joleta played Flight A for the first time, she had an average start on Friday, but lots of credit to her on how she bounced back quickly to win four consecutive without giving her opponents any chances to compete against her. Also, very happy for Mikaya she is a hard worker and deserved the wins."

Budiman and Advaita Saravanan won against Stony Brook 7-5 to win the Flight B Main Draw.

Abdelrahman was pleased with his teams play in doubles as well, "Holly (Matson) and Rafaella (Sampaio) are just improving every match. I am more than satisfied for the level they provided this weekend. They lost in a very close match against a top level Syracuse team, and they had their chances in every game. They play top level and with some more experience on the big points they would compete against any team, Joleta and Advaita lost at Navy in the first round and seeing them winning this tournament is certainly a good sign."

Next up for the Highlanders is the Lehigh Invitational held on October 6-7 in Bethlehem, PA.
