George Washington Scores Late Goal to Top NJIT, 1-0

NEWARK, NJ—George Washington's sophomore Brady O'Connor scored the game-winner in the 80th minute and the Colonials held on for a 1-0 victory over NJIT Saturday afternoon on the camps of Rutgers-Newark Alumni Soccer Field.

The win moves George Washington to an even 3-3 on the season while the Highlanders drop to 5-2 on the season.

O'Connor's goal, his first of the season, came on a header off a throw-in by Colin Anderson on the left side of the field, past the Highlander goalkeeper for the lone goal of the match.

In the last meeting between the two teams last season, O'Connor scored the only goal of the match on a penalty kick to give the Colonials the victory.

An evenly played match between George Washington and NJIT, the Highlanders held a 13-9 advantage in overall shots while the Colonials edged the home team in corner kicks, 8-6.  Sophomore Pablo Jimenez paced the Highlanders with six shots (three on goal) while Juan Zapata and Rene White tallied two shots each.

"We lost a match that we shouldn't have," third-year head coach Fernando Barboto added post game.  "We dominated the match by considerable margin, especially in possession.  We gave up a goal on a long throw-in and that's college soccer for you.  But we needed to have more courage and conviction in the final third and around the goal.  We let that one get away!  But we will turn around and prepare this week as we open ASUN Conference play."

George Washington goal keeper Thor Arne Hofs combined for the shutout, notching six saves while NJIT goal keeper Victor Pujades recorded three saves.

NJIT put on the pressure early in the match, recording back-to-back opportunities on target in the 13th minute.  Freshman Diego Martin's shot was blocked and Pablo Jimenez's shot 10 seconds later was saved by Arne Hofs.

George Washington had a chance in the 17th minute on a blast by junior midfielder Max Holdsworth inside the box but Pujades recorded the save.

Jimenez with a low shot chance in the 24th minute but a diving save by Thor Arne Hofs holds the Highlanders off the scoreboard.

Ten minutes into the second half, Jimenez's strike from outside the box was corralled by a two-handed save by Arne Hofs.

In the 60th minute, George Washington's Haukur Hilmarsson strike in the 60th minute on a free kick, bent around the NJIT wall and over the net.

The Highlanders most dangerous chance in the second half came in the 65th minute off the foot of redshirt sophomore Rene White, who received a pass from Jimenez, which slipped between two Colonial defenders.  White's strike sailed just wide.

NJIT will kick off ASUN Conference action on September 22 at 3pm when the Highlanders host FGCU on the campus of Kean University East Campus Facility.
