Men’s Tennis Concludes Season at ASUN Tournament; FGCU Tops NJIT, 4-1

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, FL--
Sixth-seeded NJIT, making its first ASUN Conference Tournament appearance dropped a 4-1 decision to third-seeded FGCU in the ASUN Men's Tennis Quarterfinals hosted by North Florida at UNF Tennis Complex.

The score is the result of the tournament format, which calls for incomplete individual matches to be halted as soon as one team achieves the points necessary to clinch a victory.

FGCU (9-11 overall) picked up the double point, with wins at the second and third spot while earning wins at second, third and fifth singles to secure the 4-1 victory.

" A tough loss for our last match," head coach Ira Miller commented after the match. "We battled hard in heavy winds but credit to defending ASUN Champs FGCU for having more depth. Abdullah (Fouad) played one of the best matches of his young career. Veteran captain Richard (Rangga) refused to lose his last college match and held off four match points. It all looks very promising for next year."

Freshman Abdullah Fouad, a 2018 ASUN Conference All-Freshmen team honoree, registered the lone Highlander point at fourth singles.  Fouad, who joined the Highlanders in January from Cairo, Egypt, won in straight sets, defeating FGCU's Javier Fernandez, 6-4, 6-2.

NJIT finished the 2018 season with a 9-11 overall mark, 1-5 in the ASUN.  The nine wins surpass last season's win-output of (seven) while also finishing with a mark of 7-2 at home, inside The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
