NEWARK, NJ – NJIT men's volleyball fell in straight sets to Penn State on Friday evening, 21-25, 17-25, 15-25.
The Highlanders (3-10, 1-3 EIVA) were led by
Piotr Namiotko with eight kills and
Alvaro Gimeno with seven kills.
Ricardo Whitaker led the team in three categories assists (19), digs (6) and aces (1).
The Nittany Lions (10-3, 5-1 EIVA) were led by Calvin Mende with nine kills, Kevin Gear with eight kills and Matthew McLaren with seven kills. Mende also led the team in blocks with four.
Luke Braswell had all of Penn State's assists with 31 and Royce Clemens had a game-high eight digs.
In the first set, closest set between the teams, the Highlanders took a quick 6-4 lead but couldn't hold it going back and forth with the Nittany Lions who went up 10-9 and didn't relinquish their lead the rest of the set.
The second set had a similar outcome, with NJIT having their greatest lead at 4-2 after kills from Namiotko and
Luca Berger. Penn State took a 14-12 lead and scored the next four points to extend their lead to 18-12. The Highlanders came back within five at 20-15 but would only score two more points in the set.
The third and final set was dominated by the Nittany Lions, whose highest lead came at the end of the game, winning by 10 points 25-15.
The Highlanders turn around and host Saint Francis U tomorrow at 7pm at the Wellness and Events Center.
