NEWARK, NJ – NJIT men's volleyball swept the weekend series over Charleston (WV) with a 3-0 win in EIVA action on Sunday at the Wellness and Events Center.
The Highlanders (5-13, 3-6 EIVA) were led by
Piotr Namiotko and
Alvaro Gimeno who combined for 33 kills. Namiotko hit .469 in the match with a match-leading 18 kills while Gimeno added five digs and an ace.
Setter
Ricardo Whitaker posted a match-high 43 assists, added six digs and three block assists.
For Charleston (WV) (11-6, 3-5 EIVA) Rajahl Moxey led the Golden Eagles with 12 kills, while Ryan Santos notched three blocks. Anthony Rivera had 20 assists and eight digs.
The first set went into extra points, with the Highlanders coming out on top 27-25.

Kevin Myren posted his fifth kill of the set to tie it up again 25-all. With an attack error by Charleston (WV) and another kill by Gimeno the Highlanders secured the set 27-25.
The Golden Eagles went up 2-0 in the second set, before Gimeno and Namiotko tied the score up at 2-2. With the score tied at 3-3, NJIT scored six unanswered points to take an 8-3 lead that they would not diminish, ultimately winning the set 25-20.
The third set was determined by two points. The Highlanders had the advantage most of the set before four straight points by the Golden Eagles giving them an 11-8 lead. NJIT battled back and neither team led by more than two points until NJIT head coach
Danny Goncalves subbed
Raymond Kowalski into the match to servce. Kowalski entered the set, leading 24-23 and notched the final kill for the 25-23 win.
The Highlanders host non-conference opponent Erksine on Wednesday, March 21 at 7pm inside the Wellness an Events Center.
