NEWARK, NJ—Princeton completed a weekend sweep at NJIT with a 3-1 EIVA Conference men's volleyball win Saturday afternoon at the Wellness and Events Center.
Princeton (5-4 EIVA, 6-11 overall) won in tight sets Saturday – 26-28, 26-24, 25-14 and 27-25. The two teams competed in a five-set thriller Friday night at Dillion Gymnasium with the Tigers coming out on top, 3-2.
The Tigers were led by Parker Dixon with 13 kills followed by Greg Luck (12) and George Huhmann (12). Setter Joe Kelly just missed notching a double-double with 31 assists and nine digs, in addition to four total blocks (1 solo, 3 assists).
In addition to Kelly's team-best nine digs, Huhmann added six followed by three different Tigers – Luck, Dixon and libero Corry Short with five digs.
Princeton held an 18-to-9 team blocking advantage, paced by eight total blocks (1 solo, 7 assists) by middle Junior Oboh while Huhmann combined for seven total (2 solo, 5 assists) and Trey Slicker and Luck with five block assists.
Huhmann paced the team with four service aces.
NJIT (1-6 EIVA, 3-13 overall) were led by
Alvaro Gimeno and
Raymond Kowalski's 15 kills. Kowalski finished the match with a .242 hitting percentage on 33 attempts and seven errors.
Setter
Ricardo Whitaker combined for a double-double, notching a match-best 36 assists and 11 digs. Gimeno added six digs for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders led the service ace category paced by middle
Kevin Myren, who notched four aces and finished with a .462 hitting percentage (7k, 1e, 13a).
Middle
Luca Berger combined for five total blocks (1 solo, 4 assists) while Gimeno posted four block assists.
NJIT, which trailed late in the frame, 22-20, after four straight points by Princeton called its find timeout of the set. The Highlanders used a 4-1 run, pulling ahead by one, 24-23, a block assists by Whitaker and Myren, resulting in a timeout by Princeton.
The set saw three more ties, the final at 26-all after a kill by Kowalski, which sparked a 3-0 run to close out the frame, 28-26.
A back-and-forth affair in the second frame, the set saw 10 ties and seven lead changes, the final tie at 24 after an NJIT service error. The Tigers scored the final two points to even the match at 1-1.
Princeton hit an impressive .357 in the third set as opposed to the Highlanders, which hit .083. The Tigers cruised to a comfortable 25-14 win, paced by Luck's five kills.
The fourth set featured 19 ties, 12 lead changes and saw the Highlanders at match-point, 24-23, after a Princeton attack error. After a Tiger timeout, Princeton sealed the frame with a 4-1 and went on to win 27-25.
NJIT will break for a week and return to action on Saturday when the Highlanders host Charleston (WV) at 7pm.
