NASHVILLE, TN—Lauren Cagle's 22 points and 13 rebounds led Lipscomb to a 66-58 win over visiting NJIT in ASUN Conference action at Allen Arena Saturday afternoon.
After the game saw its 12
th tie of the game, 51-51, with 5:26 on the clock in the fourth quarter, after a layup by Taylor Clark, Lipscomb scored the next five (seven in the run), pulling ahead, 56-51.
NJIT's
Taj Lewis and
Ellyn Stoll cut the Highlander deficit to three on two different occasions, the final on a three-pointer by Stoll at the 2:48 mark, 59-56 but Lipscomb would close out the game on a 7-2 run for a 66-68 victory.
Cagle finished the game, shooting 8-for-13 from the field, 2-of-4 from three-point range , 4-of-7 from the free throw line while dishing out a team-best six assists. Her 13 rebounds were a game-high as the home team held a slight advantage on the glass, 39-to-38.
In addition to Cagle's 22 points, Taylor Clark netted 13 points while Lauren Rau chipped in 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals for Lipscomb. Rau, who was fouled down the stretch, finished 7-for-10 from the free throw line.
NJIT's senior forward
Taj Lewis paced the Highlanders with 14 points off the bench while redshirt junior
Kelly Guarino added 11 points on 3-of-8 shooting from three-point range.
Tatianna Torres filled up the stat sheet, netting seven points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Guard
Amber Morgan finished with eight points, five assists and three rebounds for NJIT.
In a back-and-forth affair in the first quarter, the Highlanders held a 19-16 lead after the first 10 minutes of action, behind five points from guard
Amber Morgan.
NJIT continued its strong play into the second quarter, connecting on a three-point play by
Dez Allen and extended its lead to six, 24-18, on a fast break layup by Morgan at the 8:29 mark, resulting in a Lipscomb timeout. The Lady Bisons used an 8-0 spurt to go ahead by two, 26-24, on a short jumper in the paint at the 5:45 mark by Loshaveon Jones. NJIT's
Tatianna Torres connected on a jumper from the free throw line to knot the game at 26-all for the seventh time in the contest. The Highlanders closed out the quarter, scoring 10 points in the final five minutes and leading by two, 36-34, after
Kelly Guarino drained a three from the left wing.
Lipscomb's Cagle, who was one-rebound shy a double-double at the half, led all scorers with 13 points and nine rebounds while NJIT's Morgan and Torres each netted seven points for the Highlanders. Senior
Taj Lewis chipped in six points in 11 minutes of action off the bench.
NJIT extended its lead to seven, 44-37, on an 8-3 spurt to open the third stanza. NJIT, leading by six, 46-40, the home team closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 46 – the final four consecutive by Lauren Rau.
All tied at 46, NJIT went ahead, 51-48, after using a 5-2 run, after a three-pointer by Guarino at the 7:27 mark. Lipscomb's Clark's layup at the 5:26 mark, sparked seven straight points for the Lady Bisons, pulling ahead, 56-51, with 3:36 left to play.

Ellyn Stoll knocked down her first three-pointer of the game, cutting the deficit to three, 59-56, at the 2:44 mark. Lipscomb answered on the other end on a three-pointer by Kaylee Cotton, putting the Lady Bison up six, 62-56, and held on to secure its fifth win in ASUN Conference action, 66-58.
NJIT will close out the home portion of its schedule, playing its next three games in the Wellness and Events Center. The Highlanders will welcome Kennesaw State on February 7 at 7pm.
