JERSEY CITY, NJ—Despite a career-high 24 points and 14 rebounds from NJIT j Danielle Tunstall, Saint Peter's picked up its first win of the 2018 season with a 70-57 victory over visiting NJIT on Tuesday at the Yanitelli Center.
Tunstall paced the Highlanders (0-1), shooting 10-for-12 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Her 14 rebounds was a game-best.
Saint Peter's (1-0) Briyanah Richardson produced a game-best 25 points to lead the Peacocks to its first win of the season. Richardson scored 10 of Saint Peter's 17 points in the first quarter, as she finished the quarter shooting 4-for-4 from the field.
Guard D'Aviyon Magazine notched 11 points while three different players – Wil'lisha Jackson, Cinnamon Dockery and Zoe Pero combined for six points. Jackson pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
In addition to Tunstall's 24 points, sophomore Ellyn Stoll recorded 12 points followed by Dez Allen, who came off the bench to score eight points and five rebounds. Graduate student Tatianna Torres dished out six a game-high six assists.
It would be Tunstall who would score the season's first points for NJIT, as she hit a jumper in the first minute and seven seconds into the game. Tunstall followed up with another jumper to give NJIT a 4-0 lead before Saint Peter's went on a 7-0 run, heading into the first media timeout. Richardson hit four of Saint Peter's first seven points to lead the run.
Saint Peter's led 17-13 at the end of the quarter.
Tunstall would continue her hot streak into the second quarter as she shot 3-for-3 from the field, finishing the half with 17 points. She was also 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Ellyn Stoll finished the first half with six points, while senior Kelly Guarino added a three-point basket. Saint Peter's led 32-28 into halftime.
Saint Peter's wasted no time in the third quarter as the Peacocks opened up with a 12-4 run before the media timeout to take a 44-32 lead. Richardson scored eight of the first twelve points to lead the way, which set the pace for the Peacocks as the home team outscored NJIT 19-12 in the third quarter.
The Peacocks matched their third quarter total (19) in the fourth quarter. The Highlanders improved with 17 points in the quarter, but it wouldn't be enough.
The Highlanders out-rebounded Saint Peter's, 42-30, and recorded 16 assists with six team blocks in the game.
NJIT continues its five-game road-trip on Friday as the Highlanders visit Howard at 3:00 p.m.
