PHILADELPHIA—
Penn scored 51 first half points led by Ashley Russell's game-high 25 points in the Quakers 85-42 victory over visiting NJIT in non-conference women's basketball action at The Palestra Saturday afternoon.

Penn picks up its second straight win of the season, improving to 3-1 while the Highlanders move to 0-4 on the young season.

Russell, the Quakers senior guard, finished with 25 points, shooting 10-for-13 from the field and 4-of-4 from behind the arc.  Princess Aghayere and Michael Jones were the Quakers other double-digit scorers, adding 12 and 11 points respectively.

Penn out-rebounded the visiting Highlanders, 46-to-37, led by Russell with eight.

NJIT had three players reach double-figures, paced by graduate student Kelly Guarino and sophomore Ellyn Stoll, who netted 11 points each.

Junior forward Danielle Tunstall added 10 points.  Guarino shot 4-of-9 from the field and 3-of-7 from three-point range.  Tunstall shared game-high honors with Penn's Russell, grabbing eight rebounds.

NJIT jumped out of the gates, scoring the first four points of the game for an early 4-0 lead and pushed ahead, 7-3 on a put back jumper by Tatianna Torres at the 6:28 mark.

Penn used a 7-0 spurt to take its first lead of the game, 11-7, after a three-pointer by Phoebe Sterba and extended its lead to 12, 21-9, with less than two minutes in the first period.

The Quakers outscored the Highlanders in the second period, 28-7, to take a 51-19 advantage heading into the half.  Russell scored 17 points in the second period.

At the half, Russell led all scorers with 21 points while Tunstall was NJIT's top scorer and rebounder with six and six.

Penn continued its strong play into the third quarter, holding a 68-28 advantage.
