NEWARK, NJ -- The Highlanders placed first in 11 of 13 events as NJIT sprinted past St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday at the Wellness and Events Center. In the process, the Highlanders improved their record to 3-3 while dropping the Terriers to 0-4.

"I was very pleased with how everyone swam tonight after a hard week of training," said first-year head coach Ron Farina. "Our divers really dove well and we had some in-season best times."

The meet was highlighted by a pair of NJIT freshmen earning the first victories of their collegiate careers.

First, Lane Griffis scored a victory in the 1000 Yard Freestyle with a time of 10:35.96 -- out-touching sophomore teammate and second-place finisher Jeremiah Sanchez (10:51.30) by more than 15 seconds.

Second, Edward Madrigal earned a top finish in the 200 Yard Butterfly with a time of 2:05.90. He was also part of a wining quartet in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, joining junior Nicholas Lyons, sophomore Mattheau Bonner and freshman Joshua Franco for a time of 1:38.61 -- a half of a second better than a team from St. Francis. The latter three also experienced individual success on Friday.

Lyons took first place in the 50 Yard (22.14) and 100 Yard Freestyles (48.93).

Bonner was tops in the 500 Yard Freestyle (5:02.55)

Franco scored wins in the 200 Yard IM (2:00.90) and the 200 Yard Backstroke (1:59.86). The impressive freshman has at least one first-place first in all four meets this season.

Freshman Kai Legband continued his red-hot start, taking the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:48.75. He has now won at least one individual race in each of the last three meets.

In fact, NJIT freshmen swimmers have already combined for an impressive 12 first-place finishes this season in individual races.

On the diving side, junior Cole Becker won the One Meter Dive (224.55) while senior Avery Bechtel took top honors in the Three Meter Dive (242.77).

NJIT is back in action next Saturday when the Highlanders travel to Binghamton University for a 1 p.m. start. This is their final tune-up before the ECAC Winter Championships begin on Nov. 30.
