FORT MYERS, FL -- The soaring Eagles women's volleyball team swept visiting NJIT, 3-0, on Sunday at Alico Arena in Fort Myers, Fla. Florida Gulf Coast University has now won nine-consecutive matches -- the last six in straight sets -- after taking this meeting by scores of 25-14, 25-11, 25-17.
In fact, the Eagles (20-6, 11-1 ASUN) have won 19 straight sets since Liberty forced a fifth set in a 3-2 FGCUÂ road win on Oct. 12.
Meanwhile, NJITÂ (4-23, 2-10 ASUN) has dropped six-consecutive matches since scoring back-to-back conference wins on Oct. 6 and Oct. 9.
FGCU sophomore Cortney VanLiew posted a match-best 15 kills while junior
Madi Busler led NJIT with nine. Senior
Emily Krachenfels and freshmen
Michaela Dungan and
Udo Nwosu recorded three kills a piece.
Eagles senior Maggie Rick handed out a match-best 23 assists the Highlanders were paced by freshman
Marissa Soistman (8) and junior
Liz Benson (7). Benson also recorded the team's lone service ace.
Senior
Adriana Nieto led NJIT with 13 digs -- two shy of the match-high mark recorded by FGCU freshman Dana Axner (15).
NJIT will look to get back to its winning ways in a non-conference home bout against Sienna (2-24, 1-13 MAAC) on Wednesday. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Wealth and Events Center (WEC) in Newark.
The Highlanders will return to ASUN play when they host Jacksonville University (3-21, 2-10 ASUN) on Friday at 6 p.m.
