North Florida Tops Visiting NJIT

JACKSONVILLE, FL—North Florida's Bryson Smith combined for a goal and two assists leading the Ospreys to a 4-1 victory over visiting NJIT Saturday evening in men's soccer ASUN Conference action.

With the win, North Florida (4-10-0, 3-3-0), clinches a spot in the 2018 ASUN Conference Men's Soccer Tournament, while the Highlanders conclude the 2018 campaign with a (6-11-0, 1-5-0) mark.

North Florida got on the scoreboard in the 41st minute on a goal by LJ Estes.  The play started on the left side of the field, with a cross into the middle of the box and deflected off an NJIT defender, to Estes, who notched his second tally of the season.

NJIT evened the match at 1-1 three minutes later as the Highlanders initial shot by Thomas Radon hit off the cross bar and landed at the feet of leading scorer Rene White, who tucked away his 11th goal of the season.

At the half, North Florida held a 5-2 shots advantage and 2-0 in corner kicks.

The Ospreys regained the lead in the 52nd minute on a left-footed goal by Bryson Smith, as he weaved through the box to put North Florida ahead, 2-1.

North Florida added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute on a give-and-go from Smith to Jake Hawker for a 3-1 lead.  The goal for Hawker was his first of the season.

Shane Nicholson scored his first goal of the season for North Florida in the 79th minute, assisted by Smith, his second of the match, to take a 4-1 advantage.

North Florida held a 13-8 overall shot advantage (8-4 on goal).  Radon paced the Highlanders with three shots.

White, who missed the 2017 season due to injury, bounced back in 2018, netting 11 goals which ranks third in the ASUN and tied for 23rd in the nation.  His 24 points ranks fourth in the league.  He scored the programs first hat trick in the Division I era, in a come-from-behind victory over Saint Francis U and scored at least one goal in nine of NJIT's 17 matches.  In two seasons at NJIT, White has recorded 16 goals, four assists and 36 points.

Highlander keeper Victor Puajdes finished the season with 54 saves (third in ASUN), .701 save percentage (fifth in the ASUN) and 1.58 goals against average (fourth in the league).  He combined for four shutouts this season, bringing the junior to 17 shutouts for his career.

Andrew Nino, the Highlanders co-captain, paced the team and ranks second in the ASUN with seven assists.  He netted two goals and was credited with a pair of assists in the Highlanders wins over Navy and Stetson.

NJIT seniors Furkan Kokcu and co-captain Jack Flanagan completed their careers at NJIT.  Flanagan appeared in 62 matches, registering one goal and three assists while Kokcu played in 40 matches, combining for three assists.
