Lipscomb Sits in First Place After 2-1 Win at NJIT

HILLSIDE, NJ—Logan Paynter registered a goal and an assist in the Bisons 2-1 victory at NJIT Saturday afternoon in ASUN Conference action at Kean University East Campus Facility.

Lipscomb, winners of three straight, sit alone in the ASUN Conference men's soccer standings, improving to 6-8-0 overall, 4-1 in the ASUN.  The Bison have won five-out-of-the last six matches, heading into the final weekend of ASUN play.

Visiting Lipscomb got on the board in the 13th minute on a goal by Preseason Player for the Year Paynter, his sixth of the season.  John Wynia was credited with the assist, his fourth of the year.

Minutes later, sophomore Pablo Jimenez put one in the back of the net but an offside was called and the goal was disallowed.

In the 23rd minute, redshirt sophomore Rene White carried the ball down the right side, serving the ball into the back of the box to Jimenz, who headed the ball but Lipscomb's Chris Zappia held the Highlanders off the board.

NJIT (6-9-0, 1-4-0 ASUN) evened the match at 1-1 in the 60th minute on a chipped ball across the face of the goal by graduate student Jack Flanagan, to junior captain Andrew Nino, who scored his second goal of the season.

Lipscomb regained the lead in the 72nd minute, 2-1, on a nice possession inside the box.  The play started with Austin Eager on the right side of the field, crossing the ball to Paynter low in the box, who found, Daniel Zapata in the middle, touching in the game-winner.

The visiting Bison held an 8-3 advantage in the first half in shots while the Highlanders edged Lipscomb in the second period, 7-6.  The overall shots favored Lipscomb, 14-10.

Lipscomb's Chris Zappia and NJIT's Victor Pujades each stopped four saves.

NJIT will return to action on Tuesday at 3pm when the Highlanders host La Salle in non-conference action.  The Highlanders will honor lone senior Furkan Kokcu.
