NJIT Looks for Second Straight Win; Welcomes Lipscomb Saturday at 1pm

NJIT will wrap up its three-game homestand, hosting the Lipscomb Lady Bisons on Saturday afternoon in the state-of-the-art Wellness and Events Center (WEC) with opening tip is set for 1 p.m.

The Highlanders (3-17, 1-4 ASUN) are coming off a 75-65 win over North Florida on Monday, for the teams' first ASUN win of the 2018 season.

With the win, NJIT snapped a six-game losing streak, which dated back to a 73-57 victory over Long Beach State on December 28 in the NJIT Basketball Holiday Tournament.

Starting in January, every NJIT game played in the ASUN Conference, home and away, throughout the regular season and into the ASUN postseason tournament will be covered on ESPN3.

All-Time Series
NJIT leads the all-time series over the Lady Bisons, 3-1.  In the last meeting on February 14, the Highlanders defeated Lipscomb, 76-53.  NJIT swept the 2016-17 season series from the Lady Bisons.

Guard Alana Dudley led four double-figure scorers with 18 points, including three three-pointers and a game-best six assists.  Kelly Guarino netted 17 points, shooting 5-for-11 from downtown in addition to five rebounds and four steals. 
 
Forward Leah Horton combined for 14 points and seven rebounds on 4-of-8 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.  Tatianna Torres filled up the box score with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Scouting the Lady Bisons
Lipscomb (6-14, 2-3 ASUN) are coming off a home loss to top-ranked FGCU, 68-54.  Senior Loren Cagle led the team with 20 points, six rebounds and two steals while freshman Taylor Clark notched 14 points.  Senior Loshaveon Jones grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds.

Cagle, the only player who is averaging double-digits for the Lady Bisons, was named to the preseason watch list for the Nancy Lieberman Award, which is handed out each season to the best point guard in the nation. She was one of 20 student-athletes to earn the recognition and six of only four players from a mid-major program on the list.

Her 16.9 ppg, 4.0apg and 39.4 three-point field goal percentage ranks second in the ASUN while pacing Lipscomb on the boards at 5.6rpg and steals (42).  Emily Kmec is averaging 9.7ppg and leads the Lady Bisons from behind the arch with 50 three-pointer made. 

Scouting the Highlanders
The Highlanders (3-17, 1-4 ASUN) are coming off a 75-65 win over North Florida on Monday, for the teams' first ASUN win of the 2018 season.

NJIT's Tatianna Torres registered a double-double (19 points and 11 rebounds), Kelly Guarino scored 18 points and Dez Allen added 11 points in the Highlanders'.

Guarino, making her fourth start of the season, combined for 18 points on 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-7 from downtown, which ties her season-best mark.  Allen was one rebound shy a double-double, chipping in 11 points and nine rebounds.

Senior forward Taj Lewis added eight points and five rebounds while Ellyn Stoll notched seven points in 14 minutes of action.

NJIT's Torres paces the team in three categories—points (11.7ppg), assists (63) and steals (39).  She has recorded at least one steal in 19-out-of-20 games and two assists in 18-out-of-20 games.  Torres ranks fourth in steals and sixth in assists in the ASUN.

Guarino is the Highlanders other double-digit scorer at 10.5ppg.  In the last two games, Guarino has connected on 10 three-pointers and since starting the last four, she is averaging (12.3ppg).

Lewis, who ranks second in the ASUN in field goal percentage, is shooting 51.6 percent while averaging 9.3ppg.  Sophomore Danielle Tunstall tops the team in rebounding at 6.1rpg.

NJIT will play the next two games on the road, first visiting Kennesaw State on February 1 at 11am and Saturday at Lipscomb with tip slated for 1:30pm (CT).
