NJIT Remains Undefeated With 1-0 Win at LIU Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY—Senior Mamadou Guirassy scored the lone goal of the game and sophomore keeper Victor Pujades combined for the shutout in the Highlanders 1-0 road win at LIU Brooklyn Wednesday evening in men's soccer non-conference action.

NJIT remains undefeated in 2017, moving to 4-0-1 on the season while LIU Brooklyn still seeking its first win of the season, drops to 0-3-1.

The 2017 season marks the best start in program history for NJIT, since competing at the Division I level (first season 2004). In 1983, when NJIT competed at the Division III level, the Highlanders started the season, 4-0-1.

Guirassy, reigning ASUN Conference Player of the Week scored on a breakaway from a lead pass by sophomore Andrew Nino with one minute remaining in the first half to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.  Guirassy recorded his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The senior forward has scored at least one goal in the last four-out-of-five matches and became the NJIT Division I career leader in total goals, raising his total to 16.  His 37 career points ties the NJIT D1 mark with Marko Drljic (Class of 2014).

The win marks the second straight shutout for Pujades and fourth of the season, as the sophomore combined for six saves for the clean sheet.  LIU Brooklyn's Cole Palmer made four saves in the loss.

The Highlanders edged the home team in total shots, 14-13, paced by Guirassy with seven shots (three on goal) while seniors Danny Cordeiro and Phillip Costa notched two shots apiece.

NJIT, which closes out its five-game road trip, will return to action on Saturday, September 9 in the Highlanders home opener against St. Francis Brooklyn at 3pm.  The game will be played at Kean University East Campus Facility in Hillside, NJ.
