NEWARK, NJ—NJIT senior
Tess Albyn was the only Highlander to register double-digit kills, 10, as visiting FGCU won in straight sets, 3-0, in ASUN Conference women's volleyball action at the Fleisher Athletic Center.
FGCU, which dropped its previous two matches, bounced back to the win column, improving to 8-3 in the ASUN, 18-8 overall while the Highlanders drop to 1-10 in the ASUN, 11-17 overall.
The Eagles, led by Giovanna Borgiotti's match-high 14 kills, took NJIT in straight sets, 25-19, 25-15 and 25-21. Snowy Burnam was the other Eagle to post double-figure kills with 10, combining for an impressive .625 hitting percentage on 16 attempts and no errors. Kaitlan Krivdo posted nine kills followed by Cortney Vanliew with eight.
Setter Maggie Rick notched a match-best 42 digs while Karissa Rhoades led the match with 11 digs. Burnam added nine digs defensively for the Eagles.
In front of the net, Krivdo produced five blocks (all assists) while Vanliew added four blocks (all assists).
In addition to Albyn's team-best 10 kills,
Iva Mandic and
Alyssa Armada followed with eight and seven kills respectively.
Sophomore setter
Liz Benson notched 25 assists and six digs while libero
Olivia Welsch led the Highlanders with seven digs.
Junior
Jovana Baosic paced the Highlanders with three total blocks (all assists).
The first frame saw seven ties and one lead change, the final tie early at 8-8. The Eagles scored five consecutive, taking a 13-8 advantage. NJIT battled its way back into the set, closing the Eagle gap to one, 15-16, after four straight points, resulting in an FGCU timeout. FGCU used an 8-4 spurt to close out the frame with a 25-19 victory.
FGCU jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the second set and pushed ahead, 17-9, after five straight points. The Eagles went on to win the second set comfortably, 25-15.
In the third set, FGCU combined for a .229 hitting percentage, combining for 16 kills. Late in the frame, NJIT down 17-24, scored four straight points, pulling within three of the visitors, 21-24, but the Eagles secured the win with a kill by Daniele Serrano for the sweep.
NJIT will conclude the home portion of its schedule on Sunday at 1pm hosting Stetson on Senior Day. NJIT will honor its graduating seniors Albyn,
Mikalah Hughes,
Alyssa Armada and
Adrianne Bynoe in pregame ceremonies.
The match between NJIT and Stetson will be the last match played in the Fleisher Athletic Center as the Highlanders will begin a new era in the Wellness and Events Center.
