North Florida Sweeps Volleyball In Season Finale


JACKSONVILLE, FL—North Florida closed out the 2017 season with a straight set victory over visiting NJIT, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in ASUN Conference women's volleyball action at UNF Arena.

The Highlanders conclude the 2017 season with a 12-19 overall mark, 2-12 in the ASUN while the Ospreys stand at 12-18 overall, 5-9 in the ASUN.

North Florida notched a 25-17, 25-17 and 25-10 home victory, the Ospreys fifth straight home win of the season.

The Ospreys hit .306 in the match led by Devyn Wheeler's match-best 12 kills followed by Taryn Griffey with 10 kills.  Griffey hit .500 for the match on 16 swings and just one error.

Middle Alana Shoff combined for six blocks (all assists), which ties her for fifth in single season block assists with 106 on the year.

Libero Ashley LaBorde produced 13 digs followed by Wheeler (8), Carinne Turner (6) and Asante Lopez (6).

North Florida held a dominant advantage in the service ace category, 6-0.

NJIT was led by three Highlanders – Tess Albyn, Alyssa Armada and Madi Busler, each notching seven kills apiece in the season finale.

Liz Benson combined for 25 assists, six digs and three blocks (all assists) while libero Adriana Nieto led the Highlanders with nine digs.

Senior middle Mikalah Hughes combined for three block assists.

In the opening set, the two teams traded points leading to a 6-6 tie.  Both teams went on a run leading to a 16-15 North Florida lead late in the set before the Ospreys closed on a 9-2 stretch led by Griffey's two aces and a kill to win the set 25-17.

After trading an early 3-3 tie, North Florida raced out on an 8-3 run to take an 11-6 lead and never look back inset two.  The Highlanders made a quick run to come within one at 12-11, but the Ospreys rattled off a 9-2 run to take the set 25-17.

The Ospreys opened the third frame on an 11-4 run and held a lead that was never relinquished en route to a dominant 25-10 set win.
