Stetson Comes from Behind to Win 2-1 Over Visiting NJIT on Penalty Kick

DELAND, FL—Stetson's Deniz Dogan's penalty kick with just over three minutes remaining in the contest was the difference as the Hatters came from behind to win, 2-1, over visiting NJIT Sunday afternoon to remain undefeated in the ASUN Conference at the Athletic Training Center.

Stetson (4-0 ASUN, 6-5 overall) outshot the visiting Highlanders (2-1 ASUN, 7-4-2 overall) 17-11 in total shots (7-3 on shots on goal).  NJIT held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

"We came out and pushed to take the lead," second-year head coach Fernando Barboto added.  "But in the second half, we let the match slip away, giving up silly fouls and set pieces.  We can't do that in conference play."

The nation's leading scorer, senior Mamadou Guirassy registered five shots for the visiting Highlanders, with one shot on frame.

In the 24th minute, Guirassy slipped past his defender and blasted a shot from the side but was deflect by Joseph Melong.

NJIT took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute on a header to the far post by senior Jack Flanagan, his first of the season, on a serve from Pablo Jimenez past a diving Melong for a 1-0 lead.

In the 67th minute, NJIT keeper Victor Pujades made a diving save off a direct kick by Dogan, keeping the Hatters off the board.

The Highlanders held a 1-0 lead until the 70th minute, when Justin Broome headed home the equalizer off a corner kick from Raphael Northoff.

Stetson pushed ahead for the go ahead goal in the 85th minute off a direct kick by Finn Busmann, but the initial shot was punched out by Pujades.  Dogan collected the rebound at the top of the box but Pujades made another impressive save and the Highlander defense cleared the ball for a 1-1 tie.

With 3:18 left to play in the contest, Dogan was taken down from behind, resulting in a penalty kick.  Dogan tucked away his team-leading fifth goal of the season to the left corner to give the Hatters a 2-1 lead.

Pujades recorded five saves for NJIT while Stetson's Melong stopped two Highlander shots.

NJIT will return to action on Wednesday at 7pm when the Highlanders face Rutgers in a non-conference match.  The match will be streamed live on BTN Plus Network.
