PHILADELPHIA—Temple's Divin Fula Luzolo registered a goal and assist in the Owls 3-1 win over visiting NJIT Tuesday afternoon at the Temple Sports Complex.
Temple improves to 7-6-1 on the season while the Highlanders, who conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule moves to 8-6-2.
"We gave up a bad goal right before the half," second-year head coach
Fernando Barboto added. "We were unable to recover from that. We need to focus on ASUN Conference play and look to bounce back Sunday on Senior Day."
The Owls held a 1-0 lead at halftime, after an unassisted goal by Jordan Wix Rauch at 39:25.
Temple scored a pair of goals in the second half, by Brendon Creed (51:26) and Fula Luzolo (71:22). Fula Luzolo was credited with Creed's assist.
The lone Highlander goal was scored by senior
Mamadou Guirassy at (86:46) assisted by freshman
Pablo Jimenez. Guirassy, the reigning ASUN Conference Player of the Week, ranks tied for first in the nation in total goals (15).
Temple goalkeeper Michael Sammik picked up the win, stopping five Highlander shots while
Victor Pujades combined for four saves.
Temple struck first in the 40
th minute on a takeaway goal by Wix Rauch, who carried the ball down the left side, striking into the far right corner for a 1-0 lead.
The Owls doubled its score, 2-0, in the 52
nd minute on a goal by Creed, assisted by Luzolo. Fula Luzolo sent a low cross off a free kick and Creed placed the shot into the lower left corner.
NJIT's
Thomas Radon had back-to-back opportunities in the 68
th and the 69
th minute but Sammik grabbed both shots.
Temple added its third goal of the game in the 72
nd minute on a goal by Fula Luzolo, his second of the season on a short cross from Thibault Candia, scoring just inside the near post.
Guirassy registered his 15
th goal of the season in the 86
th minute on a blast from outside the box, which curled into the upper right corner.
Temple was favored in shots, 16-9, and corner kicks, 8-6.
NJIT will conclude the home portion of its schedule on Sunday at 1pm, hosting North Florida. In pre-game ceremonies, NJIT will honor its six graduating seniors –
