WASHINGTON, DC
– NJIT men's soccer stays undefeated in 2016 with a 1-1 double overtime draw against Atlantic 10 opponent George Washington on Saturday at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.

Highlander leading scorer freshman Rene White gave NJIT (2-0-1) their only goal of the game in the second half to solidify the tie for NJIT.

George Washington was first to get on the scoreboard when Oliver Curry netted his first goal of the season off a pass across the box from Garrett Heine.

NJIT tried to capitalize on a corner kick in the 25th minute by senior Rickardo Oldham but the Highlanders were called offside.

The Colonials outshot NJIT 4-2 in the first half and the Highlanders first shot of the game came off a header from defender Jonathan Onyeaka in the 38th minute.

Freshman Andy Alvarez came into the game late in the first half, getting a shot off for NJIT's second shot of the half. Alvarez finished with three shots on the day.

The Highlanders outshot the Colonials 8-3 in the second half searching for the equalizing goal.

NJIT goalkeeper Victor Pujades kept GW from going ahead in the 65th minute, when Heine took a free shot from the top of the box and Pujades dove to the left to tap the ball away from the goal.

Highlander freshman White finally got NJIT on the board when Alvarez passed the ball from the left wing to White who was 12 yards out and connected into the top right corner of the net.

NJIT almost went ahead on a free kick by Oldham just minutes later. The senior took the kick from the right side just outside the box that found Victor Kausch, who one-touched the ball over the crossbar.

In the first 10 minutes of overtime, the Highlanders dominated with three scoring opportunities but were still unable to find the back of the net.

GW had one more corner in the second overtime but were unable to convert and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Sophomore Pujades and Colonial keeper Thor Arne Hofs each made four saves for their respective teams in 110 minutes of action.

The Highlanders will open the home portion of its schedule on September 6, hosting Rider at Rutgers-Newark at 4pm. It's "Taco Tuesday", where fans have a chance to win a gift card to Taco Bell or Chipotle.
