EASTON, PA—NJIT rallied for a 3-2 women's volleyball win over St. Francis Brooklyn after being down, 2-1, on day two of the Lafayette Tournament at Kirby Sports Center.
The come-from-behind victory (27-25, 16-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12) was NJIT's third consecutive win, upping its season won-lost record to 7-6. St. Francis Brooklyn drops to 3-11 on the season.
This marked the second meeting between the two teams, as the Highlanders swept the Terriers at the Terrier/Fordham Invitational on September 3.
Trailing after three sets, 1-2, NJIT fell behind for the first time in the fourth set, 17-18, resulting in an NJIT timeout. The frame saw four more ties, the final at 22 and the Highlanders stayed alive, scoring the final three points of the set, 25-22.
NJIT went up, 5-1, to open the deciding set and led 9-6 after the teams switched sides under the deciding-set rules. The Terriers scored three consecutive points, closing the Highlander gap to one, 11-12. After an NJIT timeout, the Highlanders prevailed, 15-12, closing out the set on a 3-1 spurt.
The Highlanders had two players with double-figure kills' totals. Senior transfers
Katarzyna Klocek and
Weronika Wiezik shared team-high honors with 12 kills each. Junior
Tess Albyn just missed notching double-digit kills, combining for nine followed by
Mikalah Hughes (8) and
Anneka Harris and
Anna Rodrigues with seven each.
Junior setter Rodrigues posted her third straight double-double with a match-best 40 assists and 17 digs.
NJIT, with a 79-75 advantage in digs, was pace by sophomore libero
Adriana Nieto's match-high 23 digs followed by Rodrigues (17) and
Olivia Welsch (10).
Klocek was the block leader for the Highlanders with four assists while Harris and Hughes each notched three assists.
St. Francis Brooklyn had three players reach double-digit kills, led by Aleksandra Gligoric's match-best 18 kills followed by Gabrielle Herrera and Domenique Gerard's 12 kills.
The Terriers used two setters – Macy Kurtz and Angela Hudelson in the five-set thriller. Kurtz recorded a double-double with 26 assists and 11 digs while Hudelson just missed a double-double of her own with 20 assists and eight digs.
Four Terriers—Alexa Caporuscio, Mireya Ramirez, Kurtz and Gerard posted double-figure digs paced by Caporuscio with 19.
Defensively, St. Francis Brooklyn held a 10-to-6 team blocking advantage was led by Sidney Benson's match-best five block assists.
The Terriers had an 11-7 lead in service aces, paced by Kurtz with a match-high four aces. NJIT's Klocek recorded three aces.
NJIT will conclude the Lafayette Tournament with a 6pm match against Manhattan.
