NJIT vs. Howard Highlights

NEWARK, NJ—Senior Alana Dudley and redshirt sophomore Tatianna Torres combined for 46 points leading NJIT past visiting Howard, 70-55, in non-conference women's basketball action at the Fleisher Athletic Center.

NJIT, which has won the last two out of three contests, improves to 5-7 on the season, to exceed last seasons' win total while Howard drops to 2-7 on the season.  The Highlanders snapped Howards all-time win streak, after the Bisons won the last three meeting between the two schools.

The Highlanders led by two, 16-14, at the end of the first quarter and outscored the visitors, 24-7 in the second quarter, extending its lead to 40-21 at the half.  NJIT kept on the pressure in the third quarter, outscoring Howard, 21-17, while the visiting Bison held a 17-9 advantage in the final quarter.

NJIT guard Tatianna Torres scored a new career-best with 23 points, surpassing her old mark of 18 accomplished against St. Joseph's College – Brooklyn on November 15.  The redshirt sophomore finished 10-of-16 from the floor, including four rebounds, four steals, two assists and one block.

Tri-captain Dudley combined for 23 points, just one-point shy her personal-best against Kennesaw State on February 6, 2016.  Dudley finished 9-of-15 shooting from the field, including two three-pointers in addition to a game-best seven assists.

Senior forward Leah Horton was the third double-figure scorer for NJIT with 11 points and game-best seven rebounds.

The 14 teams steals is four shy the NJIT Division I record (18) accomplished three different times since competing against a D1 schedule (first season 2006-07).  The Highlanders finished with a season-best 47.2 field goal percentage on 25-of-53 shooting from the field.

Howard was led by two double-figure scorers – Te'Shya Johnson (20 points) and Ayonna Williams (11 points) in 15 minutes of action off the bench.  Sydni Johnson paced the Bison on the boards with six as Howard held a 37-30 advantage on the boards.

NJIT scored the first four points and later extended its lead to seven, 14-7, on a three-pointer by Jordon Ireland.  Howard used a 7-2 run to close the Highlander gap to within two, 14-16, to end the first quarter.

The Highlanders, which outscored the Bison in the second quarter, 24-7, scored the opening eight points of the quarter, pushing its lead to double-digits, 10, 24-14, led by five points from Dudley in the run.  NJIT scored the final 10 points of the quarter for a 19-point advantage, 40-21, heading into intermission.

Dudley led all scorers with 14 points followed by 13 from Torres.

NJIT kept its foot on the gas in the third quarter, taking its biggest lead of the game, 30, 60-30, after a jumper by Torres with 1:35 remaining.

Howard fought back in the fourth quarter and went on a 14-2 spurt, pulling within 13, 51-64, but the Highlanders maintained its lead and went on to win 70-55.

The 77 points scored by the Highlanders is the second-highest scoring total this season (87 vs. St. Joseph's College – Brooklyn on November 14.

NJIT will break for finals and the Christmas Holiday, returning back to action on December 28, hosting Division III Rutgers-Newark at 7pm in the Fleisher Athletic Center.
