NEWARK, NJ—NJIT had four players reach double-figures paced by freshman
Danielle Tunstall's second double-double of the season, netting a team-high 19 points and 13 rebounds, as the Highlanders won convincingly, 87-53, over visiting St. Joseph's College—Brooklyn Tuesday at the Fleisher Athletic Center.
The Highlanders start 2-0 for the first time in the Division I era (first season 2006-07). NJIT last started off the season 2-0 in 2005-06, the final season competing at the Division II level, when the Highlanders defeated Kutztown (49-40) and Caldwell (61-57).
The last time the Highlanders scored 87 points, came against UMass Lowell in 2013-14, in the Highlanders 87-75 victory.
NJIT took control after the first quarter, 29-8, and combined for 58 points over the final three periods.
All eight Highlanders, who appeared in the contest on Tuesday, scored at least one or more points.
Tunstall, the Highlanders 5-foot-11 forward, scored a career-best 19 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with three steals. The freshman combined for 12 points and 14 rebounds in her collegiate debut against Wagner on November 12.
Redshirt sophomore
Tatianna Torres recorded her first career double-double, scoring a personal-best 18 points and 12 rebounds while filling up the box score with seven steals and five assists.
Senior
Leah Horton matched her personal-best with 18 points, shooting 8-for-10 from the field and pulled down seven rebounds. Horton scored 18 points against LIU Brooklyn (12.9.15) and Binghamton (12.6.14).
Co-captain
Alana Dudley was the fourth Highlander with double-digit totals with 10 points while adding three assists, two blocks (a new personal-best) and one steal.
St. Joseph's College Brooklyn was led by junior Destiny Marino with a game-high 22 points in the season opener for the Bears.
NJIT will return to action on Thursday at 7pm when the Highlanders visit Bucknell in Lewisburg, PA. The Bison from the Patriot League advanced to the second round of the WNIT and finished with a 25-8 record.
