DELAND, FL—Stetson blanked visiting NJIT, 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-13), in ASUN Conference women's volleyball action Saturday afternoon.
Stetson notched its first ASUN win of the season, improving to 4-14 overall on the season, 1-2 in the conference while the Highlanders dropped its fourth straight, falling to 8-11 overall and 0-3 in the ASUN.
NJIT senior
Katarzyna Klocek was the match-leader with 14 kills while senior co-captain
Anneka Harris added six kills.
Highlander setter
Anna Rodrigues notched 26 assisted and six digs. Sophomore libero
Adriana Nieto was the team-leader with eight digs.
Stetson was paced by Madison Atikin's 10 kills on 17 attempts with just one error for a .529 hitting percentage. Three different Hatters – McKenna Foster, Shelby Connors and Olivia Duval each notched five kills.
Hatters Roxy Lake and Karmen Reivik split time at the setting position, posting 17 and 12 assists respectively for the home team.
Defensively, Foster led the match with 16 digs followed by Eva Deisa (8) and Marissa Salazar (6). In front of the net, Shelby Connors notched five block assists and Deisa followed with four total blocks (one solo, three assists).
The Hatters edged the service ace category, 7-6, paced by a match-best seven aces by Foster. Sophomore
Emily Krachenfels led the Highlanders with two aces.
In the first frame, Stetson jumped out to a 6-3 advantage but the visitors rallied back with five consecutive points, pulling ahead 8-6. The Highlanders stayed ahead by three, 12-9, on a kill by Klocek but the set remained close, which saw three ties, the
final at 21 on an attack error by the Hatters. Stetson finished the set on a 4-1 spurt, taking a 1-0 lead.
The second set, which was played close throughout, saw 14 ties and five lead changes. The set saw its final tie at 19, after a kill by Stetson's Eva Deisa and the home team went on a 4-0 spurt, taking a 22-19 lead. NJIT, down but not out, scored the next three points, knotting the set at 22 on three consecutive Highlander kills. The Hatters closed out the set on a 4-2 spurt to go up 2-0 on the visiting Highlanders.
Stetson jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the third set and never looked back, cruising to a 25-13 victory.
NJIT, which has played its last eight matches on the road, returns home to Fleisher Family Court to host ASUN Conference opponents, Jacksonville on Friday at 7pm and North Florida on Sunday at 1pm.
