FORT MYERS, FL – NJIT women's volleyball fell to Atlantic Sun opponent Florida Gulf Coast 3-0 (12-25, 19-25, 21-25) on Saturday night.
The Eagles come off a two-game losing streak to increase their record to 21-10 overall and 10-4 in A-Sun play. With this win, FGCU secures the No. 2 seed in the A-Sun conference championships. The Highlanders, who have been eliminated from the playoffs, drop to 6-24 overall record and 1-12 in A-Sun play with one match remaining in their season.
NJIT senior
Danica Vukotic led the Highlanders with 12 kills and six digs, while her sister senior
Nina Vukotic recorded five kills and 11 digs. Freshman Adrianna Nieto tallied 12 digs for NJIT and her classmate
Emily Krachenfels recorded 18 assists.
For the Victorious Eagles, senior Eleonora Kazarian recorded a game-high 16 kills and three blocks, while freshman Amanda Carroll notched five kills and a match-high 17 digs. Freshman setter Maggie Rick tallied 24 assists for FGCU while junior Marlene Moeller had three kills and a game-high five blocks.
NJIT started off the first set strong, going up 2-0, which would be the only lead for the Highlanders in the set.
Danica Vukotic posted three kills in a row to put NJIT within a point at 6-7. But the Eagles would run away with the set after that, winning 25-12.
In the second set, the Highlanders came back from a 9-1 deficit with a 7-0 scoring streak to pull within one point of the Eagles. NJIT kept the score close most of the set, but was unable to come up with the win, losing 25-19.
In an exciting third and final set the Highlanders fought to stay alive, taking a 20-18 lead with a kill by
Danica Vukotic and two from sophomore
Alyssa Armada. The Eagles answered with six points to take a 24-20 lead, . FGCU went on to win the third set 25-21.
NJIT will head to DeLand, FL to take on Stetson on Sunday at 1pm for the last game of the Highlanders' 2015 season.
