Georgia Southern Edges Highlanders

Post Game Interview

NEWARK, NJ
—Junior Jeremy Rector's unassisted goal for Georgia Southern in the 18th minute was the only scoring for either team Friday night, as the visiting Eagles edged NJIT 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference men's soccer on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

With the win, Georgia Southern kept its grip on second place in the Sun Belt, moving to 3-1 in conference play. First-place Hartwick (3-0 Sun Belt), the defending conference champion, will visit Appalachian State for a 6 pm game on Saturday. Georgia Southern has won four of its last five matches overall and is 6-6-1 after a 2-5-1 start.

NJIT drops to 4-8-4 overall and 1-3 in the Sun Belt with one conference regular season game remaining.

The Highlanders have had a season of starts and stops since early September. They won back-to-back non-conference games (September 5 at Marist and September 11 home vs. Niagara). Since then, the only consistency in their results has been inconsistency, as they have not had consecutive wins, consecutive losses or consecutive ties in the 12 games that followed the Marist and Niagara victories.

Rector's game winner was a shot from inside the box that NJIT goalkeeper Marco Luna got a piece of. His deflection slowed the ball down, but it kept going and eased its way into the net for the only score of the night.

Luna, the reigning Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, finished with five saves. Luna's  counterpart in the Georgia Southern goal, senior Jack Falle, who was first-team All-Sun Belt in 2014, earned the shutout with four saves. Each side had a "team" save, as well.

The overall shots were close (11-9, NJIT), but the Highlanders, who had the better of the possession for the night, had a large 9-3 advantage in corner kick.

Next up for NJIT is the final regular season away game, a non-conference visit to Sacred Heart on Wednesday, November 4 at 4 pm.
