New Hampshire Sweeps Highlanders

DURHAM, NH—NJIT junior outside hitter Danica Vukotic recorded 10 kills and 11 digs for the Highlanders, but it wasn't enough as New Hampshire swept NJIT, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in Lundholm Gymnasium.

New Hampshire took the Highlanders in straight sets, 25-17, 25-22, and 28-26, with UNH improving to 8-10 overall, while NJIT falls to 4-13 on the season.

Junior outside hitter Brenna Buckwalter led the Wildcats with a match-best 12 kills, recording a .474 hitting percentage on 19 swings and just three errors.  Junior Abby Brinkman recorded nine kills, while Cassidy Croci added eight kills for the Wildcats.

Setter Taylor Dunklau piled up a match-high 29 assists and Katie Sattora led the Wildcats defensively with a match-best 13 digs followed by Brinkman's 12.

In front of the net, Croci led the Wildcats with a team-high five block assists, followed by Buckwalter's three (one solo, two assists).  Three different Wildcats notched two service aces, as the teams were even in that category.

Vukotic, the Highlanders' only player to reach double-digits kill totals Sunday, hit .222 for the match while adding 12 digs, two service aces and two block assists.  Senior outside hitter Fran Edmondson just missed recording double-figure kill totals, notching nine for the visitors.

Freshman setter Alyssa Armada posted 27 assists and four digs as twin sisters Danica Vukotic and Nina Vukotic led the team defensively with 11 digs apiece.  Senior libero Camilla Tinari added 10 digs.

In the first set, the frame saw nine ties and five lead changes, the final at 14-14.  The Wildcats went on a 5-2 run pulling ahead of the Highlanders, 19-16.  After a kill by Edmondson, the Wildcats rallied off six straight points cruising to a 25-17 victory.

In the second frame, the score remained close throughout until the mid-teens when the Wildcats held a three-point advantage, 18-15, after a kill by Maggie Kenney.  The Highlanders rallied back and tied the set at 18 on a service ace by senior Valerie Carroll.

The Wildcats scored the next three points to pull ahead 21-18, resulting in an NJIT timeout.  NJIT went on a 4-1 run out of the timeout to knot the frame at 22 on a service ace by Danica Vukotic, prompting a Wildcat timeout.  Coming out of the timeout, New Hampshire scored the final three points to take the set 25-22.

In the final frame of the match, the set see-sawed back-and-forth, with 16 ties, six lead changes and neither team leading by two.  The final tie of the set came at 26-26 after a kill by NJIT's Edmondson, but the home team would score the final two points of the set for a 28-26 victory.

NJIT will return to action on Wednesday when the Highlanders visit Lafayette at 7:05pm.

In the last meeting between the two teams in 2013, the Highlanders recorded a come-from-behind victory defeating the Leopards, 3-2, in Newark.
