NEWARK, NJ—All three women's volleyball sets Friday night were competitive, but NJIT prevailed to sweep visiting Delaware State 25-22, 25-19, and 25-22 in the Fleisher Athletic Center.
The Highlanders for the eighth time this season to surpass last season's total of seven victories. They are 8-17, while Delaware State drops to 1-19. NJIT also won 3-0 when the teams met on October 3 in Delaware.
NJIT featured a balanced attack headed by
Fran Edmondson's 10 kills. Behind her,
Danica Vukotic had 9 kills,
Kat Janssen 8, and
Valerie Carroll 7, four of which came in the opening set.
Sophomore middle Jae Jackson's 8 kills paced the visiting Hornets.
Alyssa Armada, the freshman setter for the Highlanders, collected 32 assists and NJIT had three service aces, getting one each from Armada,
Danica Vukotic, and her twin sister,
Nina Vukotic.
Taylor Marshall led DSU with 21 assists and, like the Highlanders, the Hornets got three aces from three different people—Ariana Stevens, Ayanna Lee, and Felicia Cruel.
On defense, libero
Camilla Tinari came up with a team-leading 12 digs for the Highlanders and NJIT got at least one block from each of the six players. Janssen, the freshman from Australia, had two block assists and a block solo to top the individual NJIT leaders in blocks.
Delaware State's libero, Lee, led the match with 17 digs. The Hornets also had six different players credited with individual blocks, including four with two blocks apiece. Jasmine Jackson's pair of blocks were solo blocks.
The visitors took the upper hand early, jumping to a 5-0 advantage in the opening set. The Hornets also led 6-1 and 7-2, but NJIT ran off six straight points for an 8-7 lead.
The Highlanders led by as many as 3 at 14-11, but the set would have five more ties, the last at 20-20 before three straight DSU errors help NJIT to a 23-20 advantage. Soon, an Edmondson kill made it 24-21 and after a Hornet kill, Delaware State handed set point to NJIT on a service error.
NJIT had its most comfortable set win in the second frame, 25-19, but the Highlanders trailed by 3, 8-11, before running off 4 unanswered points to go up 12-11. The Hornets later tied the score at 18-18, but NJIT scored 7 of the next 8 points, capped by a Janssen kill on set point, 25-19.
The Highlanders got out early in the third set, going up 7-3 after a
Nina Vukotic block solo. NJIT stayed ahead, but couldn't gain any separation and Hornets eventually inched into one-point leads at 21-20 and 22-21.
Danica Vukotic delivered a kill for a 22-22 tie and Edmondson and Carroll combined for a block and a 23-22 advantage the Highlanders did not relinquish.
Danica Vukotic served an ace, setting the stage for match point on a kill by Edmondson.
NJIT, which has played its last three contests at home, takes a short road trip to Lawrenceville, NJ, and a 7 pm match Wednesday at Rider. After that, the Highlanders will play their final four home contests of the season, beginning with a match next Friday at 7 pm against Hampton.
