TEANECK, NJ—NJIT women's volleyball absorbed a 3-2 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson Wednesday night in FDU's Stratis Arena.
NJIT had overcome a 2-0 deficit after with Fairleigh Dickinson won the first two sets by identical 25-20 scores. The Highlanders rallied to take the third frame 26-24, followed by a 25-18 victory in the fourth, sending the match into a deciding fifth set.
In the deciding set, FDU opened up to an early 5-2 run. NJIT tied the set at 5-5 and went ahead by three, 8-5, after a kill by Danica Vukotic. The Knights went on a 3-1 run pulling within one of the visitors, 9-8 on a kill by Violeta Slabakova. Both teams traded points until the frame was locked at 11-11. After an NJIT timeout, FDU closed out the match on a 4-1 run, capped by Allison Butler's kill, for a 15-12 victory.
Fairleigh Dickinson (1-12) earns its first win of the 2013 season while the Highlanders fall to (2-7) on the year.
Sophomore Danica Vukotic notched a match-high 22 kills to go along with 16 digs for the Highlanders, while Cathy Leung combined for a double-double with 10 kills and 19 digs. The 22 kills for Vukotic is a season-high while Leung records her third straight double-double of the season.
Sophomore Fran Edmondson posted her first triple double of her career with 16 assists, 14 kills, 14 digs and four total blocks (one solo, three assists) for NJIT.
Junior Gladis Oseguera combined for 28 assists and 10 digs and Julia Colombo added six kills and 12 digs for the visitors. Middle Valerie Carroll recorded four kills, four digs and four block assists Wednesday.
Fairleigh Dickinson's middle hitter Violeta Slabakova paced the Knights with 18 kills and 13 digs, followed by freshman Courtney Kovensky's 12 kills.
Sophomore setter Allison Butler piled up a match-high 46 assists, 17 digs and five kills for the Knights. Butler hit .833 with no errors on six attempts in front of the net.
The Knights had five players reach double-digit dig totals led by libero Corey Lostetter with (19), Butler (17), Taylor Roland-Buohl (15), Slabakova (13) and Deborah Hong (11).
Middle hitters Maddie Gibbons and Caroline Laton each combined for five total blocks for the Knights as Hanifa Addi added four block assists.
The Highlanders will return to action this weekend at the CCSU Blue Devil Invitational. NJIT faces Fordham on Friday at 7pm and will wrap up play on Saturday against host Central Connecticut State at 1:30pm and Hartford at 4pm.
