NJIT Volleyball Splits Saturday Matches at Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament

BALTIMORE, MD—The NJIT women's volleyball team defeated Loyola University Maryland, 3-1, in the Highlanders' first Saturday match in UMBC's Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament, but then the Highlanders dropped their second match of the day, falling 3-1 to Howard in the nightcap at Rac Arena..
 
NJIT, bounced back from a 3-0 loss against  host UMBC on Friday, taking the first set against Loyola on Saturday, 25-15. But the Greyhounds would even the match at 1-1 with a 26-24 win in the second frame.  The Highlanders held on for 26-24 and 25-22 victories in the third and fourths, respectively, to claim the match victory.
 
In the second match of the day, Howard earned a tight 25-22 victory in the first set, but NJIT battled back for a 25-19 win to even the score at 1-1.  The Bison closed out the final two frames, 25-18 and 25-15, boosting Howard to 8-3 on the season, while the Highlanders left the tournament with a 2-6 season record.
 
Match vs. Loyola (MD)
Sophomore Danica Vukotic led the Highlanders against Loyola, notching a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs.  Senior Cathy Leung was the other Highlander to reach double-figure kill totals against Loyola with a double-double of her own, posting 13 kills and 15 digs.
 
NJIT's Fran Edmondson was one-kill shy of posting a triple-double against Loyola as the sophomore from New Zealand filled up the box score with a match-high 25 digs, 21 assists, nine kills, four block assists and three service aces.
 
Junior transfer Gladis Oseguera recorded 23 assists and eight digs for the Highlanders.  Senior Julia Colombo combined for 13 digs and a match-high eight block assists, while Nina Vukotic added 10 digs defensively.  Colombo hit .385 for the match with six kills, no errors on 13 attempts.
 
The Greyhounds were paced by Jac Bullock, who posted a double-double with a match-high 17 kills and 14 digs.  Jane Lucas and Mindy Maloney recorded 12 and 11 kills, respectively, for the Greyhounds.
 
Setter Kelly McShea piled up 41 assists, while adding 10 digs and five block assists and Micah Duzey notched a match-high 19 digs.
 
Match vs. Howard
Whitney Fields and Katherine Broussard paced the Bison, each notching a team-high 11 kills.  Broussard posted a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs for the Bison.
 
Setter Stephanie Shultis distributed a match-high 40 assists to go along with seven digs and six block assists ,while Allyson Lods recorded a match-high 18 digs.
 
NJIT was led by senior Leung with her second double-double on the day (13 kills and 12 digs).  Danica Vukotic added nine kills and eight digs and Edmondson finished with 21 assists, nine digs, eight kills and three total blocks.
