BALTIMORE, MD—UMBC won its fifth straight match of the season, blanking visiting NJIT, 3-0 (25-8, 25-12, 25-11) at the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament in RAC Arena.
The Retrievers, the hosts for the two-day tournament, hit .452 for the match, improving to 6-4 overall while the Highlanders fall to 1-5 on the young season.
UMBC had two players reach double-figure kill totals Friday, led by Emily Witsaman with 12 kills and Ali Goc, reigning America East Player of the Week, with 10. Witsaman finished the match with a .529 hitting percentage while adding five total blocks (one solo, four assists) and Goc combined for a .421 hitting percentage, notching nine digs and three blocks assists.
Sherelle Walker recorded eight kills for UMBC and Hannah Schmidt notched a match-high .538 hitting percentage on seven kills, no errors on 13 swings.
UMBC setter Mallory McIntyre piled up a match-high 34 assists, while Schmidt led the match defensively with 10 digs.
The Retrievers held a 9-to-3 advantage in team blocks in front of the net and also held a 7-to-0 advantage in service aces led by Goc with four.
NJIT was paced by sophomore Danica Vukotic with six kills, followed by Fran Edmondson (5) and Cathy Leung (4). Gladis Oseguera recorded six assists Friday, while four different Highlanders combined for four digs – Julia Colombo, Leung, Danica Vukotic and Nina Vukotic.
Colombo and Edmondson each recorded two block assists.
NJIT will return to action on Saturday with a 12pm match against Loyola and 5pm match against Howard.
