Jensen Leads First-Place Utah Valley Past NJIT, 64-47

OREM, UT—Senior Sammie Jensen paced Utah Valley registering her 15th double-double of the season with 14 points and 17 rebounds en route to a 64-47 victory over visiting NJIT Saturday afternoon in Great West Conference women's basketball action at the UCCU Center.
 
Utah Valley and NJIT came into Saturday's contest with a 3-1 record in the Great West, with the winner taking sole possession of first place in the standings.  Utah Valley improved to 10-13 overall and sit atop at 4-1 in the conference.
 
Jensen, the Preseason Great West Conference Player of the Year, missed the last two games for the Wolverines due to an illness, finished with an impressive line in the box score with 14 points, 17 rebounds, three assists and steals and two blocked shots.
 
Tina Doughty led all scorers with 16 points for the Wolverines while Kaycee Mansfield and Whitney Jenkins finished with 11 and 10 points respectively for Utah Valley.
 
NJIT (11-15 overall, 3-2 in Great West) was led by senior guard Kimberly Dweck, who came off the bench to score 10 points on a 5-of-8 shooting night.
 
Senior Rayven Johnson, a Preseason Great West Conference first-team honoree, combined for nine points and 14 rebounds while forwards Uju Nwankwo and Nicole Maticka each chipped in eight points.  Maticka pulled down seven rebounds and had three blocked shots in the contest.

NJIT jumped out to a 6-0 run in the opening four minutes led by Maticka with four points but the Wolverines would go on a 17-2 run sparked by Doughty's jumper at 15:55, pulling ahead of the Highlanders, 17-8, with 10:39 left to go.  Doughty scored eight points in the run.
 
NJIT slimmed the lead to five, 19-14, after four straight points but Utah Valley increased the lead to double-digits, 25-14, on a three-pointer by Taylor Huber, at the 7:20 mark.
 
The Highlanders used a 5-1 run to cut the lead back down to single digits, seven, 26-19, after a jumper in the paint by Maticka with 2:40 remaining.
 
The Wolverines closed out the final two minutes on a 7-2 run for a 12-point halftime lead, 33-21. 
 
Leading all scorers after the first intermission was Utah Valley's Mansfield with nine points while the Highlanders were paced by Maticka with six points and Johnson with a high of seven rebounds.
 
Utah Valley opened the second stanza on a 7-2 spurt extending its lead to 17, 40-23, at the 17 minute mark, and never looked back keeping a double-digit lead over the Highlanders for the remainder of the game.
 
NJIT, which will have a week break from play, will return to action on Saturday, February 16 at 2pm, when the Highlanders host Houston Baptist in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.  Saturday will be "PINK DAY" - Celebrating Women in Athletics.  Click HERE for Pink Day events.
