The NJIT women's basketball team will close out the 2013 portion of their schedule with a game against Wagner Monday night at the Fleisher Athletic Center, with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
NJIT (3-12) is coming off a heartbreaking 77-72 loss at home to Virginia Commonwealth University Saturday afternoon. It was the second straight loss and sixth in seven games for the Highlanders, who look to get back into the win column on Monday against Wagner, which enters the contest with a 1-9 record.
Graduate student
Shakia Robinson is the Highlanders only player averaging double-figures with 11.0ppg. Robinson is coming off her best game yet as a Highlander notching a season-high in both points (25) and rebounds (15) against VCU. The forward from North Wales, PA, has scored in double-figure eight times this season with two 20-point performances. She is shooting an impressive 63 percent from the floor (72-112) and ranks second on the team in rebounds with 5.5rpg.
Senior forward
Uju Nwankwo tops the team in the rebounding column averaging 9.1rpg while ranking second in points behind Robinson with 9.3ppg. Nwankwo is also the team leader with 24 blocks. She has scored in double-figures seven times with a season-high 17 points in the Highlanders 84-71 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on December 19 and notched four double-doubles.
Junior point guard
Alyssa Albanese tops the team in assists (63) and steals (22) while averaging 6.9ppg. Classmate
Martina Matejcikova is third on the team in scoring with 7.6ppg and 2.3rpg.
Wagner, 1-9 on the season, has faced a challenging schedule with an 11-person roster consisting of one senior, one junior, two true sophomores, one redshirt-sophomore, one redshirt-freshman and five true freshmen.
The Seahawks have faced No. 6 Kentucky of the SEC, Seton Hall from the Big East, VCU from the A10, Eastern Michigan from the Mid-American Conference and ACC member Pittsburgh.
The lone win for the Seahawks, who were selected to finish 10th in the 2013-14 Northeast Conference Coaches Poll, came against Monmouth on November 14 in West Long Branch, 70-57.
The Seahawks are led by Jordyn Peck, who is averaging 17.7ppg with 26 three-point field goals made (ranked 28th in the nation) and shooting 79 percent from the free throw line (45-67).
Jasmine Nwajei is the Seahawks other double-figure scorer with 12.2ppg and a team-leading 32 assists. The top rebounder on the team is Ugo Nwaigwe with 6.9rpg and 29 blocks (2.88bpg), currently ranks the sophomore 17th in the nation.
The teams did not play last year, but the Highlanders prevailed 68-65 early in the previous season on November 19, 2011.
Uju Nwankwo, then a sophomore, had a double-double (14 points, 13 rebounds, plus 5 blocks) to key the NJIT win.
