Coppin State Takes Highlanders, 3-1

BALTIMORE—Junior outside hitter Ariel Richard recorded a double-double 17 kills and 10 digs for Coppin State in a 3-1 women's volleyball victory over visiting NJIT Friday at the Physical Education Complex.

Coppin State took the first two frames 25-21 and 25-23 while the Highlanders won the third set, 25-21. The Eagles put the match away in the fourth set with a convincing 25-12 victory, improving to 12-15 on the season. The 12 wins set a program record for wins in a season, surpassing the old mark of 11 in 2012-13.

For NJIT, the Highlanders closed out the road part of the 2013 season, falling to 7-14 overall with one remaining contest against Iona on November 14 at 7pm in the Fleisher Athletic Center.

In addition Richard's match-high 17 kills, Kandace Thomas notched 13 kills on 30 attempts with three errors for a .333 hitting percentage. Setter Chelsea Sauni just missed recording a double-double piling up 48 assists and posting 8 digs.

Coppin State had three players reach double-figure digs, led by Gabrielle Otero with 19, Nicole Malave (12) and Richard (10). In front of the net for the Eagles, Richard, Kendra Ireigbe and Thomas each combined for three block assists.

The Highlanders were paced by Julia Colombo and Valerie Carroll each recording nine kills, while Cathy Leung added seven and Danica Vukotic, Nina Vukotic and Fran Edmondson combined for six kills apiece.

Splitting time at the setting position, Edmondson posted 21 assists, while Grace Gao added 16 for the Highlanders. Leung led the Highlanders with 16 digs defensively, followed by libero Katie Goswick with 15.

The final home match of the 2013 season against Iona will be the final career match for three graduating seniors: Leung, Colombo and Gretchen VonKoenig.
