Record Breaking Swims in Swimming & Diving’s Season Opener

BETHLEHEM, PA- The NJIT Swimming and Diving team opened their 2013-14 campaign, setting the bar high setting three school records Saturday securing a win against Colgate (142-126) and falling to host Lehigh (53-222).

Sophomore Brian Capozzola finished first overall in the 100 yard Freestyle with a time of 47.95.  In addition, Capozzola also finished first against Colgate in the 50 yard freestyle (21.99) and the 200 yard freestyle (1:46.98).

Freshman Anthony Czar and sophomore Richard Seffrin finished 2nd (10:06.69) and 3rd (10:08.26) overall respectively, in the 1000 freestyle.  Czar also set a new school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.51.  Czar's times beat Senior JT Stefan's records both set in February of 2013.  Seffrin kept his stride and recorded a 2nd place overall finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:15.74.

Freshman Michael Sungurov set a new school record in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:03.63.  This record was previously held by Stefan.

In addition, NJIT Diving debuted its inaugural season with sophomore David Schmidt setting the standard with a new school record in the 1 meter diving event with a score of 126.20.

Additional highlights included sophomore Dennis Popov finishing first against Colgate in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly with times of 55.61 and 2:03.48, respectively.

Head Coach Michael Lawson commented, "Continuing our record breaking swims from last year, our swimmers have exceeded our initial expectations. I know greater things are yet to come this season."

The Highlanders will return to competition Saturday, November 9 in Mahwah, NJ swimming against Ramapo.

The NJIT Swimming and Diving's home opener at the Fleisher Athletic Center will be on Friday, November 15 against St. Peter's.
