Women’s Volleyball Win Streak Ends at Five; Lehigh Blanks Highlanders

BETHLEHEM, PAThe NJIT women's volleyball win streak came to an end Saturday, as Lehigh took a 3-0 decision from the visiting Highlanders at Leeman-Turner Arena.
 
The win for Lehigh improves the Mountain Hawks' overall record to 14-6, while the Highlanders drop to 7-11 with their first loss in the last six matches.
 
Coming into the match at Lehigh, NJIT held its longest match win streak since it won 5 in a row in 2009 from September 25 to October 14. The Highlanders, who began NCAA Division I competition in 2006, opened 2009 with 8 straight wins and went on to a program DI-best 17-11 record that year.
 
Lehigh took the Highlanders in straight sets Saturday, blowing out NJIT in the opening two sets, 25-9, 25-13, before a 25-21 third-set victory clinched the match.
 
Sophomore outside hitter Danica Vukotic was the only Highlander to post double-figure kills Saturday with 10, while adding 8 digs. Vukotic has notched double-figure kills in the last eight matches with a career-high 29 kills at Central Connecticut State.
 
Senior middle Julia Colombo combined for a .600 hitting percentage with 6 kills on 10 swings with no errors, while setter Fran Edmondson added 5 kills on 10 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage.
 
Edmondson piled up 17 assists for NJIT, while Grace Gao, back in the lineup for the first time since being sidelined due to injury on September 14, added 7 assists.
 
NJIT libero Katie Goswick recorded a match-high 12 digs and Cathy Leung and Danica Vukotic each collected 8 digs.
 
Lehigh's junior outside hitter Jade Van Streepen notched a match-high 17 kills, while just missing out on a double-double with 9 digs.  Sophomore setter Amy Matula combined for 26 assists while Courtney McCutchan dug-up a team-high 10 digs.
 
The Mountain Hawks notched 11 service aces, led by Amanda Clark with three and Matula and Rachel Charles each posting two.
 
The Highlanders have four matches remaining on the 2013 schedule, three of which will be played at home in the Fleisher Athletic Center. 
 
NJIT will host Seton Hall on October 30 at 7pm.  The teams last met in 2010 in Newark with the Pirates edging the Highlanders, 3-2.
