Dominant First Half Carries Raiders Past Highlanders

HAMILTON, NY—Senior center Lulu Brase scored a career-high 15 points and nine rebounds as the Raiders defeated visiting NJIT, 72-36, Thursday evening at Cottrell Court in women's basketball action.
 
Colgate improves to 6-7 on the season having won the last two contests while the Highlanders who were coming off a 48-44 home victory over Rhode Island, falls to 7-9 on the season.
 
Brase, the Raiders 6-foot-2 center, scored a career-high 15 points while finishing the game 6-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line in 19 minutes of action.
 
Jhazmine Lynch scored 11 points off the bench for the Raiders followed by 10 points from Mariah Jones.  Point guard Lauryn Kobiela dished out a game-high six assists.
 
The Highlanders were led by senior guard Melanie Griffin's team-high nine points.  Sophomore guard Alyssa Albanese came off the bench and finished with six points and senior Rayven Johnson, the Highlanders leading scorer was held to just four points, pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
Colgate opened up the contest on a 7-0 run in the opening minute and half of play.  Melanie Griffin got the Highlanders on the board with its first points of the game on a three-pointer from the right side and the Highlanders followed up with a layup by Uju Nwankwo, for a 7-5 score three minutes into the contest.
 
Colgate took a nine-point lead, 14-5, on a layup by Carole Harris while Alyssa Albanese got the Highlanders back on the board knocking down a jumper from the baseline at the 14-minute mark, for a 14-7 score.
 
The Raiders pushed its lead to, 15, 22-7 on back-to-back three-pointers by Jhazmine Lynch and Jones to go along with a jumper by Kelly Reid from the free throw line which sparked an 8-0 run with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. 
 
NJIT's Griffin connected on a jumper from the free throw line breaking the ice for the Highlanders at the 9:40 mark but the Raiders scored the next eight points four by Harris and on a fast break layup by Jones for a 30-9 advantage.
 
NJIT got back into the mix at the 6:02 mark on a jumper from the elbow by Nwanwko and a pair of free throws by Johnson for a 30-13 score in favor of the Raiders with 5:21 remaining.
 
With five minutes remaining in the half the Raiders went into the locker room on an 11-9 run led by Jones with 10 points while shooting 47 percent as a team (17-for-36).  NJIT's Griffin finished with seven points for the Highlanders. 
 
The home team opened the second half on a 6-2 run with four points coming inside from Reid and a jumper by Missy Repoli at the 15:30 mark, for a 47-24 score.
 
Colgate extended its lead into the mid-20's with 10 minutes remaining in the contest and never looked back cruising to a 72-36 home victory.
 
The Raiders held a 41-to-35 advantage on the boards while shooting 42 percent from the field (28-for-67) and 81 percent from the free throw line (9-of-11).
 
The Highlanders, which are 5-2 at home this season, will play the next two contests against Patriot League opponents, returning to action on Saturday at 2pm when NJIT hosts Lehigh.
 
Last season, the Highlanders fell in Bethlehem, PA on December 7 by a score of 61-37 led by Albanese's career-high 10 points.
