BROOKLYN, NY—Maryland and St. John's took NJIT in straight sets Saturday at the 2012 Blackbird Invitational hosted by LIU Brooklyn at the Wellness Center in women's volleyball action.
In the opening match against Maryland, the Terps swept the Highlanders, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21) improving to 7-4 on the season.
Leading the way for the Highlanders was freshman
Fran Edmondson, who posted a match-high 10 kills.
Camilla Tinari added nine kills while
Janet Snell followed with eight.
Splitting time at the setting position was senior
Anna Mercado and sophomore
Barbara Perru. Mercado combined for 15 assists and eight digs while Perru posted 13 assists.
Libero
Renata Pandolfo led the match with 18 digs. The senior from Joinville, Brazil has now registered double-figure digs in 12 consecutive matches.
Maryland's Kamrin Gold and Mary Cushman notched eight kills apiece while Ashleigh Crutcher and Adreene Elliott recorded seven digs apiece for the Terps.
Elliott hit .438 for the match with seven kills, no errors on 16 swings in the victory.
Maryland's setters were even in the assists column with 16 while Sarah Harper collected 14 digs. Elliott posted a match-high seven total blocks (one solo, six assists) leading Maryland to an 11-4 team blocking advantage over the Highlanders.
In the nightcap, St. John's defeated NJIT, 3-0, (25-16, 25-9, 25-16) led by Karin Palgutova's 11 kills. Palgutova hit .786 for the match (11k, 0e, 14a) followed by nine kills from Wachowicz, who hit .727 for the match on 11 swings.
Setter Sabina Piegza piled up a match-high 35 assists while adding nine digs. Gabriela Petkova was the only player to reach double-figure digs for St. John's with 10.
For NJIT, Tinari posted seven kills while setter Mercado added 11 assists. Libero Pandolfo kept her consecutive double-digit streak alive (13) posting 10 digs.
The Highlanders will return to action Wednesday at Fairleigh Dickinson at 6pm.
